此地震考一冊は予か師涛【濤】山先生の考る所にし
てこの頃童蒙婦女或は病者なとさま〳〵の虚説
にまとひおすれおのゝきまた今に小動も止す
此後大震やあらむと心も安からされは暦代の
ためしを挙て其まよひを解きこゝろをやすん

せんとす京師は上古より大震も稀なり宝暦元
年の大震より今年まて星霜八十年を経れは知
る人すくなし此災異に係て命を損し疵をか
うふる人数多なり時の災難とはいへとも亦免【まぬがれ】か
たしとも言へからす常に地震多き国は倉庫家建
も其こゝろを用ひ人も平日に心得たれは大震と
いへとも圧【壓】死すくなく和漢の暦代に記せし地裂
山崩土陥島出涛【濤】起等は皆辺【邉】土なり阿含短智慶

させようとするものである。京師（京都）は上古より大地震も稀である。宝暦元年の大地震より今年まで八十年の星霜を経ているので、知る人は少ない。この災異に関わって命を失い、傷を負う人数は多い。時の災難とはいえ、また免れ難いとも言えない。常に地震の多い国では、倉庫や家の建築もその心構えを用い、人も平日に心得ているので、大地震といえども圧死は少ない。和漢の歴代に記された地裂・山崩・土陥・島出・津波起こりなどは、皆辺境の土地のことである。浅薄な知識で軽率な議論をするなど、様々に説いて大地が皆動くように聞こえるが、そうではない。発端に出るように、震動は各処各動である。

This single volume "Earthquake Considerations" contains the investigations of my teacher, Master Tozan. Recently, children, women, and the sick have been bewildered by various false theories and trembled with fear. Moreover, since even small tremors have not ceased, people worry that a great earthquake may come and their hearts are not at peace. Therefore, I cite examples from successive generations to dispel such delusions and bring peace to their minds.

The capital (Kyoto) has rarely experienced great earthquakes since ancient times. Eighty years have passed from the great earthquake of Hōreki 1st year (1751) to this year, so few people remember it. Many people lose their lives and sustain injuries in connection with such disasters. Though they are calamities of the times, one cannot say they are unavoidable either. In countries where earthquakes are frequent, warehouse and house construction takes this into consideration, and people are mentally prepared in their daily lives, so even with great earthquakes, deaths by crushing are few. The ground splitting, mountain collapses, land subsidence, island emergence, and tsunami occurrences recorded in successive generations of Japanese and Chinese histories all occurred in border regions. Through shallow knowledge and hasty arguments, various explanations make it sound as if the entire earth moves, but this is not so. As stated at the beginning, earthquakes are localized movements in various places.
