なる所を指す。その心（しん）より四方へ散らばって漸く柔らかく緩やかになるのを末とする。そうであれば、東より揺れて来るのではなく、西より動いて来るのでもなく、その心より揺れ始めて四方に至り、その限界は段々と微動となって終わるのであろう。今度震動する所は京師を心として近国に亘り、末は東武・南紀・北越・西四国・中国に達する。また京師の中でも西北の方が心であったのか。その時東山でこの地震に遭った人は、まず西山が何となく気立ち昇って、忽ち市中に土煙を立てて揺れ来り、初めて地震である事を知ったということである。

日輪が西山に沈む、その色は血のようであった。同七月四日、月が沈む、その色もまた同じであった。『和漢合運』に云う、寛文二年壬寅三月六日より二十日まで、日は朝夕血のようで、月もまた同じ。五月朔日大地震、五条石橋が落ち、朽木が各々崩れ、土民の死者は七月まで止まず出た、とある。広島氏の談によると、享和三年十一月、諸用ありて佐渡の国小木という湊に滞留していた時、同十五日の朝であったか、同宿の船が係留している船頭と共に日和を見ようとして近辺にある丘へ出た時、船頭が言うには「今日の天気は誠に怪しい。四方濛々として雲が山の腰に垂れ、山の半腹より上は峰が現れ
