From the great earthquake on the night of March 24th, the Sai River decreased daily, and the ferry crossing at Tanba Island became limited to one location. The nearby Susohana River, which normally flows into this river, also decreased daily, and as all rivers gradually diminished, it finally became possible to walk across the ford at Tanba Island. Therefore, the villages of Kawanakajima were terrified and panic-stricken, and in the southeast at the foothills of Mount Tsumajo and Mount Ariake, south of Kaizu Castle, and generally at the foothills east of the river, there was no room even for a knee, so they built huts and retreated to various places to wait for the flood waters. However, at the seventh hour of dawn on March 28th, the stagnant water at the blocked location of Kawaura within Kinasa Village upstream of the Susohana River immediately burst through and flowed into the Sai River, though there was nothing particularly unusual about this. In the mountains upstream of this river, the villages of Jikyōhara, Fujisawa-gumi, Umemoto, Shiro-no-koshi, Ōta-gumi, Iori, and Arai were all destroyed, and Nen-

The Gaunin temple in Nenbutsuji village toppled and fell into the valley, and after being burned, was buried in the earth. Upstream from the Tanba Island ferry crossing, at the border between Sarashina and Minochi, the red rocks and Mount Iwakura filled deep valleys of several tens of jō, and Aniwa village experienced landslides in two locations, blocking the same waterway for several days. Due to the accumulated water, dozens of villages including Shinmachi, Hokari, and Maki-no-shima were submerged. Private houses drifted on the ripples, and in the deep valleys the vast water surface extended eight to nine ri. There was an inspection by the lord of Kaizu, who provided relief to the destitute people of the submerged villages. Furthermore, he ordered the villages of Kawanakajima to construct new earthen embankments using stone-filled straw bags to prevent urgent disasters. Each household relied on their nearest locations - to the west Mount Komatsubara and Mount Okada, to the east Mount Saijō, Mount Hoshina, and Mount Ariake, or built temporary shelters in the fields, prioritizing the elderly.
