◯枕ことば序など。歌の意にあづかれる事なきは。すてゝ訳さず。
◯万葉集なる哥をこゝかしこ。てふをはなとをかへて入れられたるは。すべて万葉集のまゝにて訳す。
◯此書の書るやう。訳語は皆片カナを用ふ。訳の傍に平がなして書るは。其歌の中の詞の。これ
にあたるといふ事をしめせるなり。数の文字は其句とにしたるなり。またかたへに筋をひきたる
は。歌のうちにはなき詞なるを。添えていへる所のしるしなり。【四角の中に数字】一二三などしるせるは。一の句
二の句三の句などの。訳をはぶける所をしめせる也。【四角の中に「上」】上とあるは上の句也。猶 つばら【詳しい】なる事
は。かの遠鏡に譲りて。こゝにはもらしつる事も多ければ。遠鏡を見てわきまへしるべし。

現代語訳
◯枕詞や序詞など、歌の意味に関わることがないものは、捨てて訳さない。
◯万葉集にある歌をあちこちで、てにをはを変えて入れられているものは、すべて万葉集のままで訳す。
◯この書の書き方について。訳語はすべて片仮名を用いる。訳の傍らに平仮名で書いてあるのは、その歌の中の言葉で、これに当たるということを示したものである。数字は各句に付けたものである。また脇に線を引いてあるのは、歌の中にはない言葉であるが、添えて言った所の印である。一二三などと記してあるのは、一の句・二の句・三の句などの訳を省いた所を示したものである。「上」とあるのは上の句である。なお詳しいことは、あの『遠鏡』に譲って、ここには漏らしたことも多いので、『遠鏡』を見て理解すべきである。

英語訳
◯Pillow words (makura kotoba) and prefaces (jo) that do not relate to the meaning of the poems are omitted and not translated.
◯Where poems from the Man'yōshū have been incorporated here and there with altered particles, they are all translated according to the original Man'yōshū versions.
◯Regarding the writing style of this book: All translated words use katakana. What is written in hiragana beside the translations indicates which words in the poem correspond to the translation. Numbers are attached to each verse. Lines drawn to the side mark places where words not in the original poem have been added for explanation. Numbers like 1, 2, 3 in boxes indicate places where translations of the first verse, second verse, third verse, etc. have been omitted. Where "上" (upper) appears in a box, it refers to the upper verse. For more detailed matters, I defer to that work "Enkyō" (Distant Mirror), and since much has been omitted here, one should consult "Enkyō" to understand properly.
