○私が貝殻を集めることすでに久しい。今蔵している物は数百品ある。しかしながら無名の物が多く、多くの同好の人に示して一つ一つ判別するのは非効率的である。かつて諸書の中の貝類の部分を広く調べてみたところ、世俗で知られている物は一品で多くの名前を持ち、甚だ煩雑である。また無名の物が最も多い。故に今その形状によって仮に名前を付け、後人の訂正を待つのみである。
○また「介」というのは蛤・螺・貝・蟹・海老・亀・鼈のこの七種である。肉を内にして骨を外にする物は皆「介」という。また宝貝・子安貝の属・種を「貝」という。蛤蚌というのは総て両殻が相合わさった物をいう。巻いた物を螺蠃という。

General Principles

○I have been collecting shells for a long time. The items I now possess number several hundred varieties. However, many are unnamed, and showing them to fellow enthusiasts to identify each one individually is inefficient. When I previously surveyed the shell sections in various books, I found that commonly known specimens had multiple names for a single variety, which was extremely confusing. Moreover, unnamed specimens were most numerous. Therefore, I have now provisionally named them according to their forms and await correction by future scholars.
○The term "kai" (shell creatures) refers to these seven types: clams, snails, shells, crabs, shrimp, turtles, and soft-shelled turtles. Those creatures that have flesh inside and hard parts outside are all called "kai." Cowrie shells and false angel wing shells and their varieties are called "gai" (shells). "Clams" refers generally to those with two shells that fit together. Coiled ones are called "spiral shells."
○There are also circular forms like moon-and-sun shells and sea mirrors, or horizontally elongated ones like blind shells and reed blinds, or vertically elongated ones like straw raincoat shells and feather shells, or those bent at knee-like angles like razor clams and mussels
