[Right folio] (Library stamp: Tokyo Imperial University Library) (Collection stamp: Ishimoto Collection) [Left folio] The Earth is enveloped by air to a depth of thirteen ri. This air absorbs the yang energy of the sun and retains it within. Yin energy rises from the Earth itself; when combined with yang, it becomes wind, rain, and clouds. When yin energy rises with great intensity, it becomes thunder. When yang energy descends with great intensity and enters into the Earth, it causes trembling and shaking — this is an earthquake. All people know this to be so, yet none can predict the moment when such trembling will occur. It is for this reason that earthquakes are accompanied by fires and cause many injuries. It is understood that earthquakes from ancient times have all followed the same principle. Herein, I have endeavored to record all earthquakes from antiquity, compiling them for your perusal. Composed by Kyōshin
