療治（りやうじ）ちがひと看病人（かんびやうにん）の不心得（ふこゝろへ）にて
死（し）する者（もの）多（おゝ）ししかれども病家（びやうか）その
手（て）あてのあしき事をしらず皆（みな）天命（てんめい）と
いふといへども未（いま）だはじめより其痘に
的中（よくあたる）の薬も用（もち）ひず麤忽（そこつ）なる看病（かんびやう）し
て死（し）たる者（もの）是も天命（てんめい）とはいひがた

現代語訳
治療方法の間違いや看病人の不注意によって死亡する者が多い。しかし病人の家族はその手当ての悪いことを知らず、皆天命だと言う。とはいうものの、まだ初めからその痘瘡によく効く薬も用いず、粗雑な看病をして死んだ者について、これも天命とは言い難いであろう。

Many people die due to incorrect treatment methods and the carelessness of those nursing them. However, the families of patients do not know that their care was inadequate, and they all say it was fate. Nevertheless, for those who died without ever using medicines that are effective against that particular smallpox, and with careless nursing from the beginning, it would be difficult to say that this too was fate.
