を画く縁起に五十六代清和天皇貞観二年庚辰九月【860年】慈覚大師
霊感によりて素盞烏尊を勧請し奉る牛頭を戴て諸悪災
難をはらひ給へとの神託によりて牛御前と称し奉るとなり
又慈覚の弟子良本阿闍梨を留て一宇を譲り本地大日如来
を造立し本尊とし又石仏の釈迦を刻て良本に与へ大師登

牛の御前に参詣した記録【墨田区】
文化八年（1811年）閏二月十五日、牛嶋の牛の御前の開帳に参詣した。神影は衣冠束帯の像として描かれている。縁起によると、第五十六代清和天皇の貞観二年（860年）九月に、慈覚大師が霊感を受けて素戔嗚尊を勧請申し上げた。牛の頭を戴いて諸々の悪災難を払い給えとの神託によって牛御前と称し奉るようになったという。

Record of Pilgrimage to Ushi no Gozen [Sumida Ward]
On the 15th day of the intercalary second month of Bunka 8 (1811), I made a pilgrimage to the public exhibition (kaichou) of Ushi no Gozen at Ushijima. The divine image is depicted as a figure in court dress and cap. According to the temple's founding legend, in the second year of Jogan during the reign of the 56th Emperor Seiwa (860 CE), the Buddhist monk Jikaku Daishi received a divine inspiration and invited the deity Susanoo no Mikoto to reside there. Through a divine oracle stating "Bear the head of an ox and dispel all evil disasters and calamities," the deity came to be called Ushi Gozen (Ox Deity).
Additionally, Jikaku Daishi left his disciple, the acharya Ryouhon, and entrusted him with a temple building. He created Dainichi Nyorai as the honji (original Buddhist form) and made it the principal image. He also carved a stone Buddha of Shakyamuni and gave it to Ryouhon before ascending Mount Hiei. From then on, Ryouhon took the name Myooin Temple, recited one thousand copies of the Lotus Sutra, and used that stone Shakyamuni as the object of worship.
