On top of this, the dōshin (police officers) pressed their attack even harder and captured Matajūrō. Fujioka had a maegami (forelock). Hayashi was by nature a vigorous and strong man who fought so fiercely with his sword that the magistrate's dōshin—Komaki Ichiemon, Akabane Yozaemon, Horiguchi Kizaemon, Naruse Matazaemon, Ishino Rokudayū—as well as a dōshin from Bizen-no-kami's group, Iwase Ichirōzaemon, and one other person, eight in total, were all wounded by Toemon. Among these nine men, three suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. Finally, Toemon was also captured alive. At dawn, Bizen-no-kami and the magistrate came to Bungo-no-kami's lodging at Zōjōji temple and reported that they had captured alive four members of the conspirators' faction—Betsuki, Hayashi, Miyake, and Fujioka—but Toki Yozaemon had fled. Heizoku fought and wounded a dōshin named Shinooka Genemon. Hayashi Toemon fought fiercely and wounded eight dōshin; among the total of nine, three were in mortal danger. They then withdrew. On the 14th day, at the Council Chamber (hyōjōsho), Betsuki, Hayashi and the others were interrogated about the purpose of their conspiracy and their accomplices. They confessed and recorded in detail all their fellow conspirators, relatives, and associates. Next, there was a dispute over who deserved primary and secondary credit for capturing Toemon, which could not be resolved.
Consequently, the magistrate ordered that the family names of those who grappled with Toemon be recorded, noting exactly where each person had grabbed hold of him. Later, Hayashi was questioned: "Your fighting was unparalleled in all history. Because of this, there is debate among those who captured you, and it cannot be decided. Which person who grabbed you should be considered first? Speak in detail." Hayashi replied: "I cannot clearly remember the sequence. However, I was first confused when someone grabbed my hair, and was taken in that confusion. After that, many people piled on top, so I cannot clearly distinguish the sequence." The one who grabbed his hair was Komaki Ichizaemon, a dōshin in the magistrate's group. Therefore, he was designated as having primary credit and received an exceptional reward.
1. A retainer of Mizuno Mimasaka-no-kami named Ishibashi Jiemon (holding a 300-koku stipend) was identified by Betsuki as the ringleader of this conspiracy. Consequently, orders were given to Mimasaka-no-kami's domain, and both brothers were immediately confined. The younger brother is called Ishibashi Matajirō and has a forelock.
