物也おろそかにし給ふ間敷と申て帰り中一日置て又来る下人に申
付留守と称して一巻を封の侭にて玄関の床の鞍箱の上ゟとりて庄
左衛門に渡候ゆへ其巻物之中何事候や不存と申上る伊豆守庄左衞
門に被問候処兵部申通りに御座候封印少も不違然とも両三日迄手
前に差置候へは何とぞちがはさる術を搆へ見申たる事も候はんか
と申上吟味により一味の内に書加へ候也長島刑部左衞門見之申上
たるへし于時豊後守兵部に尋てのたまふは汝は何ゆへにその巻物
をは披見いたさゝるや兵部畏て申上るは怪く存候ゆへその試に巻
物鞍箱の上に差置く其時庄左衛門おろそかにすへからすと申て罷
帰り候故弥不思儀に存し不及披見下人に申付戻し候豊後守重て汝
それ程に心付を不審に思ふに於ては何そ件の書を持参し吾に見せ
さるや仮令件の書物は見せす共右之子細を吾に告さるや寔に不忠
也尤罪科不軽乍心附披露せさるは是も同類にひとしと被呵兵部面
をたれて雌伏す
一徒党加判連衆三百人も候はん歟と石橋申たるに依て其人数を拷問
して尋らるゝといへ共白状せす右之書付は人をすゝむるへき方便
の謀書也と云々

そこで（巻物を）受け取り、玄関の床の鞍箱の上に置いた。庄左衛門は「これは一大事の安否を決める巻物である。おろそかにしてはならない」と申して帰った。一日置いてまた来たので、下人に申し付けて留守と称し、一巻を封印のままで玄関の床の鞍箱の上から取って庄左衛門に渡した。そのため、その巻物の中に何が書いてあるかは知らないと申し上げた。伊豆守が庄左衛門に問われたところ、兵部の申す通りであった。封印は少しも違っていない。しかしながら、二、三日まで手元に置いていたのであれば、何とか（封を）破らない方法を工夫して見たこともあっただろうかと申し上げた。吟味により一味の内に書き加えられた。長島刑部左衛門がこれを見て申し上げたであろう。その時豊後守が兵部に尋ねて仰せになったのは「汝は何故にその巻物を披見しなかったのか」兵部が恐れて申し上げるには「怪しく思いましたので、その試しに巻物を鞍箱の上に差し置きました。その時庄左衛門がおろそかにしてはならないと申して帰りましたので、ますます不思議に思い、披見するには及ばず下人に申し付けて戻しました」豊後守が重ねて「汝が

Therefore, I do not know what was written in that scroll, he reported. When Izu-no-kami questioned Shōzaemon, it was exactly as Hyōbu had stated. The seal was completely intact. However, if it had been kept in his possession for two or three days, he might have devised some way to examine it without breaking the seal, he added. At that time, Shōzaemon said not to treat it carelessly and returned home, so I became even more suspicious and, without examining it, instructed a servant to return it." so alert and found it suspicious, why did you not bring that document and show it to me? Even if you did not show the document itself, why did you not report these circumstances to me? This is truly disloyal. The crime is certainly not light. Being aware yet not reporting it is equivalent to being an accomplice." Hyōbu was scolded, hung his head, and prostrated himself.
