寺坂吉右衛門
右の書付を取り次いだ桑名武左衛門が請け取り、早速伯耆守殿へ申し上げたところ、朝五時前のことゆえ、まだご出勤されていなかった。そのため即刻袴羽織を着用し、刀を差し、用人両名が脇に付き添い、内玄関口へお出ましになった。「浅野内匠頭殿の家来で浪人の忠左衛門、助右衛門というのは、この両人のことであろうか」とお尋ねになり、「私どもでございます。早速お出ましいただき、お目にかかることができ、ありがたい仕合わせと存じます」と申し上げた。伯耆守殿が「上野介を討ったのか」とお尋ねになり、両人が答えて「確かにご首級を見申した」と申し上げた。右の書付を受け取ったので、御老中方へ申し達し、指図をいたしましょう。まず両人とも草鞋を脱ぎ、上がって休息いたし、お待ちください。衣服なども心次第に直すようにと仰せられ、書院へ通るようにと仰せつけられた。

The above document was delivered by Kuwana Buzaemon, who received it and immediately reported to Lord Hōki no Kami. Since it was before five o'clock in the morning, His Lordship had not yet reported for duty. Therefore, he immediately put on his hakama and haori, wore his sword, and appeared at the inner entrance with two retainers accompanying him on either side. He inquired, "Are you the two men, the rōnin Chūzaemon and Sukeemon, retainers of Lord Asano Takumi no Kami?" They replied, "We are indeed those men. We are most grateful that you have come out immediately to meet us, which we consider a most fortunate circumstance." Lord Hōki no Kami asked, "Did you strike down Kōzuke no Suke?" The two men answered, "We have indeed confirmed seeing his head." Having received the above document, I shall report to the Council of Elders and await their instructions. First, both of you should remove your straw sandals, come up, and rest while you wait. You may also repair your clothing as you see fit, and you are instructed to proceed to the reception hall.
