元録十五壬午年十二月十五日只今面々名乗申上候通り大石
内蔵助を初として足軽に至迄都合四十六人死不盗 ■（本ノ侭）【注①】士之臣
等謹而奉供亡君尊霊候去年三月十四日尊君被及刃場
上野介殿其子細は不奉存然処尊君は御切腹上野介殿御
存生 御公裁之上卑臣等如斯之企尊君之不応賢
慮却而御怒奉恐入候得共私共は尊君之臣に而厚録を
喰申候倶に不可戴【注②】天之義難黙止同く不踏地之文豈不恥
哉然共録を可給之主なく昼夜細涙沈罷在候仮令抱恥空
敷相果候共於泉下可申上詞も無御座依之可奉継御意
【注① 字面は「金+戒」に見えるが、本来は「賊」と思われる。おそらく、この資料を書写する際に用いた底本も写本であり、既に誤写されていて、見えた侭に書写したものと思われる。】
【注② この字面は五行目の「公裁」の「裁」と同じに見えます。これも理由は注①と同じかも。】
現代語訳
元禄十五壬午年十二月十五日、ただ今それぞれが名乗り申し上げました通り、大石内蔵助をはじめとして足軽に至るまで、都合四十六人の忠義を尽くす武士の家臣らが、謹んで亡き君主の御霊に供養申し上げます。去年三月十四日、尊い君主が刃傷沙汰に及ばれ、上野介殿に対してその詳しい事情は存じておりませんが、しかしながら尊い君主は御切腹され、上野介殿は御存命のままです。公正な裁きの上で、卑しい臣らがこのような企てをすることは、尊い君主の賢明なお考えに応えるものではなく、かえって御怒りを受けることと恐れ入っておりますが、私どもは尊い君主の家臣であり、厚いお録高を頂戴しておりました。共に天を戴くことはできない義理があり、黙って止めることは難しく、同じく地を踏まない文句を恥じないでしょうか。そうは言いましても、俸禄を給するべき主君がなく、昼夜細やかな涙に沈んでおります。たとえ恥を抱いて空しく果てようとも、泉下において申し上げるべき言葉もございません。これにより、御意を継ぐべく

On the fifteenth day of the twelfth month of Genroku 15, the year of the Water Horse (1702), as each of us has just announced our names, forty-six loyal retainers from Ōishi Kuranosuke down to the ashigaru (foot soldiers) respectfully offer memorial service to the spirit of our deceased lord. Last year on the fourteenth day of the third month, our revered lord committed an act of violence, and while we do not know the details regarding Lord Kōzuke-no-suke, our revered lord committed seppuku while Lord Kōzuke-no-suke remains alive. Under official judgment, we lowly retainers undertaking such an enterprise does not accord with our revered lord's wise consideration and may instead incur his anger, which we fear deeply. However, we are retainers of our revered lord and have received generous stipends. We cannot share the same heaven [with our lord's enemy] - this is a matter of duty that cannot be silently ignored, and would we not be ashamed of the principle that [enemies] do not tread the same earth? Even so, without a master to provide stipends, we are immersed in sorrowful tears day and night. Even if we were to die shamefully and in vain, we would have no words to offer in the underworld.
