涙仕候と申候由言舌慥に遖成様子に候由聞人泪をしほらぬ

候様に申付候御家老脇より挨拶に旦那義何そと申付候故鶴を料理
仕候緩々と御賞味可有之候と申候内蔵助承之此間永々御馳走罷
成候上只今之御意之趣難有次第に奉存候何も之内未鶴は給不
申者も可有之候間緩々と頂戴可仕と別而忝次第奉存候其後いつ
れも江申候は最期も近々と覚申候由密々語申候由
現代語訳
涙を流しましたと申しました。その言葉遣いは確かで、本当に立派な様子だったということです。これを聞いた人で涙を流さない者はいませんでした。
細川越中守殿のところでは、未年の二月二日の朝、全員が呼び出されて座敷で料理を振る舞われることになりました。御対面の際に「この間は何のもてなしもできなかった。今朝はもてなしをするように」と申し付けられました。家老が脇から挨拶して「殿様が何かと仰せ付けになったので、鶴を料理いたしました。ゆっくりとご賞味ください」と申しました。内蔵助はこれを承って「この間は長い間ご馳走になり、ただ今のお言葉の趣は有難い次第と存じます。皆の中には、まだ鶴を食べたことのない者もおりましょうから、ゆっくりといただこうと思います」と、特に恐縮する次第だと申し上げました。その後、皆に向かって「最期も間近に迫ったように思われる」と密かに語ったということです。

At Lord Hosokawa Etchū-no-kami's residence, on the morning of the second day of the second month in the year of the Sheep, everyone was summoned and served a meal in the reception room. During the audience, the lord said, "I have not been able to offer you proper hospitality during this time. This morning I have ordered that you be entertained." A senior retainer approached and respectfully said, "Our lord has given various instructions, so we have prepared crane for you. Please take your time and enjoy it." Kuranosuke accepted this, saying, "We have been receiving your hospitality for a long time, and we are most grateful for your kind words just now. Among our group, there may be some who have never eaten crane before, so we will take our time to partake of it." He expressed that this was a particularly gracious gesture. Afterward, he said to everyone, "It seems our final moment is drawing near," speaking these words in secret.
