春（はる）の花（はな）さけば
月（つき）又さやけく秋（あき）かと
おもへはゆきもふりて
しきおり〳〵のたの
しみはあれども
またそのうへを
大つうじんと
なりてくらしたき
事をねがふ
こゝにしん
だいにふそく
なくひやうとくは
余情（よせい）とて
うとくにくらし
けるが大つうの
うまみをしらす
なにとぞそのみちに
いらんと日（ひ）〳〵こゝろをくだきしか
とろ〳〵とひるねのゆめのあいだあわいゝ
かしくうちにあらずちやづけのにはなの
できるうちさとりのゆめを見る

現代語訳

春の花が咲けば、
月もまた清らかに秋かと
思えば雪も降って、
四季折々の楽
しみはあるけれども、
またその上を
大通人と
なって暮らしたい
ことを願う。
ここに新
大に不足
なく兵衛とくは
余情といって
宇都宮に暮らし
ていたが、大通の
うまみを知らず、
何とぞその道に
入らんと日々心を砕いていたところ、
とろとろと昼寝の夢の間、あわい良い
香のうちにあらず、茶漬けの庭の
できるうち、悟りの夢を見る。

英語訳

When spring flowers bloom,
and the moon shines so clearly it seems like autumn,
and then snow falls,
there are pleasures
in each of the four seasons,
but beyond all that,
one wishes
to become a great connoisseur (daitsu-jin)
and live such a life.
Here lived Shin-
dai ni fusoku-
naku Hyōe-toku, who went by
the name Yojō,
in Utsunomiya.
Not knowing
the delights of being a great connoisseur,
he racked his brains day after day
hoping somehow to enter that path.
Then, drowsily during an afternoon nap, in a dream,
amid a faint pleasant
fragrance, not elsewhere, but in his own garden
where tea and rice could be prepared, he had a dream of enlightenment.
