右の歌の心は、大内（宮中）でお仕えしていた頃、内侍が「枕が欲しい」と探していたところ、ある人が腕を御簾の内へ入れて「これを枕に」と差し出したので詠んだ歌である。春の夜は短く、夢のようにはかない手枕をして、根拠もなく浮き名が立つのは口惜しいことなので、その手は枕にはできませんと言っている。その「かいなく」という語に「腕」と「甲斐なく（意味がない）」を掛けて詠んでいる。

The meaning of this poem is as follows: When the court lady was serving at the imperial palace, she was looking for a pillow, saying "I wish I had a pillow." Someone then extended their arm through the bamboo blind, offering "use this as a pillow," so she composed this poem. She says that spring nights are short, and using such a fleeting arm-pillow like a dream would cause an unfounded romantic reputation to spread, which would be regrettable, so that arm cannot be used as a pillow. In the word "kainaku," she creates a wordplay combining "arm" (kaina) and "meaninglessly" (kai naku).
