苦瓠（クコ）《ニガヒサゴ》《本草綱目》
毒がある。春に種を蒔く。原種は壺盧（ユウガオ）と同類で、蔓・茎・葉ともに壺盧と同じである。夏の夕べに五弁の白花を開き、朝になると即座に萎む。これも壺盧と同じである。瓠を結ぶ。青緑色で、味は甚だ苦い。秋になって熟す。

Kuko (Bitter Gourd) 《Nigahisago》《Compendium of Materia Medica》
It has toxicity. The seeds are sown in spring. The original variety is of the same family as korō (bottle gourd/evening glory), and the vines, stems, and leaves are all the same as korō. In summer evenings it opens five-petaled white flowers, which wither immediately by morning. This is also the same as korō. It forms gourds that are blue-green in color and extremely bitter in taste. They ripen in autumn.
