◇梗槪◇
帝國銀行に勤續廿餘年、社にあつては嚴格な會計課長であり家
庭にあつては善良な可愛いゝ五人の子供の父である中川文三は
また鍾鬼のやうな美事な髭の所有者でもあつた。將に重要な社
用を帶びて關西へ出張する途中車中に於いて妖艶なる貴婦人と
知り合ひ、多額の證券に心を動かした女は、巧みに文三に近づ
いて行つた。彼は神戸に着くと、二十年間嚴格と共にあつた鍾
鬼髭を剃つて了ひ、女と共に歡樂境に酔ひ、肉慾の奴隷となつ
て了つた。その翌朝ホテルの一室で、女のゐない事に氣付いた
時大切な公債は失はれてゐた、文三はあわてて昨夜の酒場に駈
けつけたが、ギヤング一味のために仆され、鐵道線路に運ばれ
て行つた。併し危い處でたすかり、却つて一味の一人が轢殺さ
れた。その男が文三の持ち物を身につけていたゝめ、新聞は中
川文三の死を報じ、世間は彼の職に殉じた事に同情した。今更
ら彼は姿を現はせず、それから十五年日蔭の生活に苦しみ乍
ら、活きてゐた一夜、長女元枝の獨唱會が開かれた時、會場の
隅にあつて、秘かに成人した娘の成功を泣いて喜ぶ彼の姿があ
つた。クリスマスの夜、雪のふりしきる中を、中川家の表で、
樂しげな一家の團欒によそながらの別れを告げてとぼ〳〵去つ
て行つた乞食の様な老人を、誰が十五年前の中川文三氏だと知
る者があらう……。

淺野家の老骨堀部彌兵衞から、養子安兵衛の髙田の馬場の十八
人斬り武勇談を聞かされた大竹重兵衞は淺野家の使者月岡某を
無法にも斬つた武藝者大橋又五郎を討つた下郎伊助の、勇あり
智ある行ひに惚て、一人娘を伊助に娶はせた。そして今は前原
を名乘つた伊助は主家に忠勤そ勵んでゐたが、元祿十四年彌生
央は主君内匠頭殿中刄傷の一大事出來、新婚の夢まどらかな前
原も赤穂へ駈つけなければならなかつた。御家斷絕、城明け渡
し……かくて城代家老大石の深慮による吉良復讐の企てが着
々成されて行つた前原伊助も吉良邸を探る密偵として江戸に下
つたが、その途中、かつて伊助に討たれた大橋の娘小雪と、そ
の弟正太郎とが仇伊助を探しての旅路、雲助兵のために危難し
てゐるところを救つた。が、やがてお互に相手の素性を知つ
てその奇しき因緣に惱んだ。伊助は本懐を達した翌朝浅野邸前
にて討たれる約束をして別れた元祿十五年師走十四日、赤穂浪
士達は無事主君の仇を報じたその、翌朝泉岳寺に揚げてゆく途
中、伊助は約束を果すべく大橋姉弟の姿を求めたが、この時彼
等はこの忠義と壯擧を知り仇敵として向ける刄も諦めて西國へ
旅立つて行くのだつた……。

◇Synopsis◇
Nakagawa Bunzo, who has worked at Imperial Bank for over 20 years, is a strict accounting manager at work and a kind father of five beloved children at home. He was also the owner of a magnificent beard like Zhong Kui. While on a business trip to Kansai on important company business, he met an enchanting lady on the train, and the woman, moved by his large securities, skillfully approached Bunzo. Upon arriving in Kobe, he shaved off the Zhong Kui beard that had been with him in strictness for 20 years, became intoxicated in a pleasure quarter with the woman, and became a slave to carnal desire. The next morning, when he noticed the woman was gone from the hotel room, the precious government bonds had been lost. Bunzo rushed frantically to last night's bar, but was knocked down by a gang and carried to the railway tracks. However, he was saved from danger, and instead one of the gang members was run over and killed. Since that man was wearing Bunzo's belongings, the newspapers reported Nakagawa Bunzo's death, and society sympathized with his apparent death in service. ◇Synopsis◇
Otake Jubei, having heard from the old veteran Horibe Yahei of the Asano family about his adopted son Anbei's heroic tale of cutting down 18 men at Takada no Baba, was impressed by the brave and wise actions of the lowly servant Isuke who had killed the martial artist Ohashi Matagoro who had unlawfully cut down a messenger of the Asano family, and gave his only daughter in marriage to Isuke. Now calling himself Maehara, Isuke was devotedly serving his master's house, but in the third month of Genroku 14, the great incident of his lord Takumi-no-kami's blade-drawing in the palace occurred, and Maehara, whose newlywed dreams were cut short, had to rush to Ako. The house was abolished, the castle surrendered... Thus the revenge plot against Kira, conceived through the deep consideration of castle elder Oishi, was steadily being carried out. Maehara Isuke also went down to Edo as a spy to investigate the Kira residence, but on the way, he rescued Ohashi's daughter Koyuki and her brother Shotaro, who were searching for their father's killer Isuke, when they were in danger from highway bandits. However, when they learned each other's true identities, they were troubled by this strange fate. Isuke made a promise to be killed in front of the Asano residence the morning after achieving his heart's desire, and they parted. On December 14th, Genroku 15, the Ako ronin successfully avenged their lord.
