ておびたゝしくゆり動（ウゴカ）しけれは洛中の土-蔵築-地など
大にいたみ潰（ツブ）れし家居もあり土蔵の潰れしは数多
ありて築地高塀などは大かた倒（タフ）れ怪我（ケガ）せし人も数
多なり昔はありと聞けと近く都の土地にかくはげ
しきはなかりければ人々驚きおそれてみな〳〵家
を走り出て大路に敷ものしき仮（カリ）の宿りを何くれと

現代語訳
頃（このごろ）、京師（みやこ）にて大地震があり、数日間揺れが止まなかった。東隴菴（とうろうあん）の主人が小記（小冊子）を袖に携えて来て、私（岸岱）に題言（序文）を書くよう依頼した。その記録を見るに、今すでに右（に述べた通り）の評説・絵が挙げられている。そこで仁和年間（にんなねんかん）の（地震の）徴（しるし・記録）を書き記し、題言に代えて、わずかにその責（求め）に応えることとした。

文政十三庚寅年七月二日、申の刻（さるのこく）【注２】ごろに大いに地震が起こり、おびただしく揺れ動いたので、洛中（らくちゅう）【注３】の土蔵・築地（ついじ）【注４】などが大いに傷み、潰れた家屋もあり、土蔵の潰れたものは数多くあった。築地・高塀（たかべい）などはほぼ倒れ、怪我をした人も数多くいた。昔にはあったと聞くが、近くこの都の土地でこれほど激しい（地震）はなかったので、人々は驚き恐れて、みな家を走り出て、大路に敷物を敷き、仮の宿りをあれこれと（設けた）。

Recently, there was a great earthquake in the capital, and the shaking did not cease for several days. The master of Tōrōan came carrying a small record in his sleeve and requested that I write a preface for it. Upon reading his account, I found that commentary and illustrations were already included as described to the right. I therefore set down records of the signs (of earthquakes) from the Ninna era as a substitute for a formal preface, so as to barely fulfill his request.

On the second day of the seventh month of Bunsei 13, the year of Kanoe-Tora, around the Hour of the Monkey (申の刻)【Note 2】, a great earthquake struck, shaking and trembling violently, so that earthen storehouses and mud-plastered walls (tsuiji)【Note 3】 throughout the capital (Rakuchū)【Note 4】 were greatly damaged; some buildings completely collapsed. Numerous earthen storehouses crumbled, and nearly all mud-plastered walls and tall fences fell, with many people suffering injuries. Although people had heard that such things had happened in the distant past, there had been no earthquake this violent in the capital in recent memory, so everyone was struck with shock and fear. People rushed out of their homes into the main streets, laid out mats, and busied themselves arranging makeshift shelters.
