味噌漬物雑穀の匂ひ鼻をうかちわる
くさき事昼夜言語に絶ておやむ【小止む】事なし
貴賤男女の差別なく裙【尻？】をまくり小屋の
辺りに大小便を心にまかせ年盛なりと
いへとも髪を撫揚け歯を染る事
更になく帯〆なをしちりを払ふの
心も聊なく夕へにはさうり【草履】に紐つけわらし
をはきて臥し朝たにはひしやく【柄杓】よりに
に水【？】をうけて顔を流しそこかしこに穴
を掘て薪木を入鍋にて飯を炊きやく

あさましきあり様なれかゝる歎きの

矢よりもはやしとかや思ひもよらぬ大災も
はやくも廿五日廿六日と過行けとも准あり
てか小屋掛とてのふ者もなく見知りも
せさるわらしこと女童はも打交はりて
笘を編み絶なふ事も自然とおほえ【覚え】昼は
終日うろ〳〵となれぬ事とて小屋掛を
かうもしたなら都合もよしやあらにせはやと

現代語訳

味噌、漬物、雑穀の匂いが鼻を突き、悪臭が昼夜を問わず言語に絶して止むことがない。身分の高低、男女の区別なく着物の裾をまくり上げ、小屋の辺りで大小便を心のままにする。年頃の女性といえども、髪を撫で上げ、歯を染めることは全くなく、帯を締め直し、塵を払う心もまったくない。夕方には草履に紐をつけ、わらじを履いて寝て、朝には柄杓で水を受けて顔を洗い流す。そこかしこに穴を掘って薪を入れ、鍋で飯を炊き、薬缶で汁を煮る。その日その日の成り行きは実に情けないありさまである。

このような嘆きが多かったのも昨日のことに過ぎ、今日となることは矢よりも早いとか。思いもよらぬ大災害も早くも二十五日、二十六日と過ぎ行くけれども、準備があって小屋掛けをするという者もなく、見知りもしない童や女童も入り交じって、筵を編み、縄をなうことも自然と覚える。昼は終日うろうろと、慣れないこととて小屋掛けをこうもしたなら都合もよいだろう、ああでもなければ早くと

The smell of miso, pickles, and miscellaneous grains pierced the nose, and the stench was indescribably constant day and night without ceasing. Without distinction of social rank or gender, people lifted their kimono hems and relieved themselves freely around the huts. Even women of marriageable age never smoothed their hair or blackened their teeth, with no mind to retighten their obi sashes or brush away dust. In the evenings they tied cords to their sandals, put on straw footwear and lay down to sleep, and in the mornings they received water in ladles to wash their faces. Here and there they dug holes, put in firewood, cooked rice in pots, and boiled soup in tea kettles. The daily circumstances were truly a pitiful state of affairs.

Though such lamentations were many, yesterday has already passed and today comes faster than an arrow, they say. Even this unimaginable great disaster has already passed into the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth days, but there was no one prepared to build proper huts, and unknown children and young women mingled together, naturally learning to weave mats and make rope.
