In peaceful times, people who come to help with anything do so willingly, but in times of such disaster, who would be there to help? There was no one to communicate with from the beginning, and though they passed each other thousands of times, going right and returning left, they could only look at each other's faces and wring their tear-soaked sleeves, with no way to ease their grief.
Here, his wife and children summoned their strength and tried to carry their few household goods, but being women and small children, their efforts were in vain despite working their hands and feet. Meanwhile, as fire blazed fiercely from Higashimachi continuing to Gondo, people said it was dangerous to stay here, so they were led by others and carried their luggage trying not to fall behind those hurrying ahead, and thus fled this place once again. Around this time, someone said that due to the earthquake, a mountain had collapsed and blocked the flow of the Sai River, leaving not a drop of water, and one could walk freely without waiting for boats to pass.
