現代語訳

【本文は三段構成】

【第一段】
地震で家蔵が大いに崩れ、長者は非常に心を痛め、どうしたものかと悩んでいたところに、福神がやってきて長者を諭された。

大黒：「これこれ、お前が先祖代々貯めてきた黄金であっても、ただただお金の番人をしているだけではいけないものだ。世界の宝は融通が肝要で、蓄え込んでいるだけではならぬ。これ、このように蔵が古びて家が崩れても、何も気を落とすことはない。ありがねの半分は多くの人に施して、その陰徳によってその身もますます安穏になり、家蔵や屋敷はいくつでも後から」

【第二段】
「できるもの。まず善言を先として」

【第三段】
餅丸：「心得ております。しかし、このお金はこのまま積み置いて、少しのお金を出して、鰻屋の店などに見える、あの鯰を買い取って大川に放してはいかがでございましょう」

大黒：「それも良いが、なぜお金は出せないのだ」

恵比寿：「そうですね」

餅丸：「はい、鯰を放すよりは、辛うございます。人を助ける工夫をお察しください」

恵比寿：「それそれ、大黒殿のおっしゃる通り、この節多くの困窮人へ施行を出す者がたくさんある。これらの人も不満に思い、その身の華福は二の次にして、怪我や過ちのないよう、心を信じるまでもない。陰徳さえ程よくすれば神は守るのが当たり前。なんと施しする気はないか」

餅丸：「もうもう、何事によりませず、お指図次第」

【The text is composed of three sections】

【First Section】
When the earthquake caused the wealthy man's storehouse to collapse greatly, the wealthy man was extremely distressed and worried about what to do, when the fortune gods came and admonished him.

Daikoku: "Now, now, even though this is the gold that you and your ancestors have accumulated for generations, it won't do to merely guard your money. The treasure of the world requires circulation as its essence, and it must not just be hoarded away. Look, even though your storehouse has aged and your house has collapsed, there is no need to lose heart. If you give away half of your money to many people, through such virtuous deeds your person will become even more peaceful, and houses, storehouses, and estates can be built again as many times as needed."

"Such things can be done. First, let good words lead the way."

【Third Section】
Mochimaru: "I understand. However, shall we keep this money stored as it is, take out a small amount, buy those catfish that can be seen at eel shops and such, and release them into the great river?"

Daikoku: "That's also good, but why can't you spend money?"

Ebisu: "That's right."

Mochimaru: "Yes, it would be more difficult than releasing catfish. Please consider ways to help people."

Ebisu: "Exactly, exactly, just as Lord Daikoku says, at this time there are many who give charity to the poor. Even if these people feel dissatisfied, they put their own prosperity second, and until they believe in their hearts to avoid injury and mistakes, there's no need to worry. If one practices virtue appropriately, it's natural that the gods will protect them. Won't you have the spirit to give charity?"

Mochimaru: "Yes, yes, regardless of anything else, I will follow your guidance."
