蠍可供七劑者載在方書矣為毉者可不究夫物理
而察其良毒乎於是聚諸蟲以樊之毉餘乎自冩真
四時代謝品類不同積久終以百数焉遂貼之於帖靣
彙類附説虽先喆未圗之物亦収而不遺也蓋蟲乃生
物中至微者其類甚繁今茲所圗亦不厭繁雜以為博
識之一助観者勿嗤趨于博而不知所約幸已

栗氏虫譜小引
東璧（李時珍）が言うには「蠢動含靈（虫などの小さな生き物）はそれぞれ性質と気を具えており、その効用を記録し、その毒性を明らかにすることを古の聖人は詳しく弁別した」とある。蜩（せみ）・𧍙（かまきり）・蟻・蚔（きりぎりす）など食用に供することができるものは『礼記』に見え、蜈蚣（むかで）・蠺（かいこ）・蟾蜍（ひきがえる）・蠍（さそり）など薬剤に供することができるものは医学書に載せられている。医者たる者が物の理を究めずして、その良毒を察することができようか。そこで諸々の虫を集めて飼い、医業の余暇に自ら真を写し取った。四季の移り変わりにより品類も異なり、長く積み重ねてついに百種に及んだ。そこでこれを帖面に貼り付け、類を集めて説明を附した。先賢がまだ図に描いていない物も収録して漏らすことがないようにした。そもそも虫は生物の中で最も微小なものであるが、その類は甚だ多い。今回図に描いたものも煩雑を厭わず、博識の一助とするためである。見る者は博に趣いて約を知らないと嘲笑することなかれ。

A Brief Introduction to the Kurimoto Insect Manual
Dongbi (Li Shizhen) said: "All creeping and moving creatures with souls possess their own nature and qi. Recording their functions and clarifying their toxicity was something ancient sages distinguished in detail." Cicadas, mantises, ants, and crickets that can be used as food are mentioned in the Book of Rites, while centipedes, silkworms, toads, and scorpions that can be used in medicinal preparations are recorded in medical texts. How can one who practices medicine fail to investigate the principles of natural things and examine their beneficial and toxic properties? Therefore, I gathered various insects and kept them, and in my spare time from medical practice, I drew them from life. As the four seasons change, the species vary, and over time I accumulated about a hundred types. I then pasted these onto album pages, grouped them by category, and added explanations. I collected and included even creatures that previous scholars had not yet illustrated, leaving nothing out. Insects are the most minute among living things, yet their varieties are extremely numerous. What I have illustrated here also does not avoid complexity, serving as an aid to broad knowledge. Let viewers not mock this pursuit of breadth without knowing restraint.
