千蟲帖叙
毉官丹洲栗翁示茲帖曰此吾五十年来苦心所描
請子一言余閲之則蠢動蜿蜒之属約千数百種巨
細繊悉各有生意又附以考証明晰核博周而不遺
其意在使人覩其形状而知其主治庶幾乎用薬之
一助矣蓋翁於赭鞭之学苦刻覃思毎遇一物輙辨
真偽訂異同#1而又知其所産地方山川険易土地肥
礴其著論之確辨証之博海内莫不斂袵焉況於余
之固也対此益以羞赧驚㤥耳若夫世之嗜辨物者
旦夕展玩焉則於博覧辨名未必無輔益也

醫の薬に用る草木を始としすへてもろ〳〵の虫
をあつめ千の数にも余りぬとやこれを画けるは侍
醫栗本瑞見法眼也もとより赭鞭のわさを専
らとして天つ地の中よろつの物のうへを明らかに
わきまえ知ること庸醫のよく企及所にあらすいに
し年永寿院法印しは〳〵其才の秀たるを称誉
せしか其後予も折にふれて何くれと試るに其才の
弘く通達せし事はかり難しされは此巻の成る
により序を予に需む予固より大和言の葉の道に
いさゝかたつさわりて虫といへは鈴虫松虫きり〳〵す
の類は見もし聞もせしか限りなきるいはしるへう
もあらすすへて学の道にくらく其任にあた

千虫帖序
医官丹洲栗翁がこの帖を示して言うには「これは私が五十年来苦心して描いたものです。一言お願いします」と。私がそれを閲覧すると、蠢動蜿蜒の類（這い回る虫類）が約千数百種あり、大小細部に至るまで各々に生命力があり、また考証を附して明晰で確実、博学で周到であり漏らすところがない。その意図は人にその形状を見せてその主治（薬効）を知らしめ、用薬の一助とすることにある。そもそも翁は本草学において苦心して深く思索し、一つの物に遭遇するたびに真偽を弁別し、異同を訂正し、またその産地の地方や山川の険易、土地の肥沃さを知っている。その著述の確実さと弁証の博学さは、海内（国内）で皆が敬服するところである。まして私のような固陋の者においては言うまでもない。これに対してますます羞恥と驚嘆を感じるのみである。もし世の中の物を弁別することを好む者が朝夕これを展開して玩味するならば、博覧と名前の弁別において必ずや補益があることだろう。

医の薬に用いる草木をはじめとして、すべてもろもろの虫を集め、千の数にも余ったということだ。これを画いたのは侍医栗本瑞見法眼である。もとより本草学を専らとして、天地の中のよろずの物の上を明らかに弁え知ることは、庸医のよく企て及ぶところではない。いにしえより永寿院法印はしばしばその才の秀でたることを称誉していたが、その後私も折に触れて何くれとなく試してみるに、その才の広く通達していることは計り難い。されば此の巻の成ることにより序を私に求む。私はもとより大和言葉の道にいささか携わって、虫といえば鈴虫・松虫・きりぎりすの類は見もし聞きもしたが、限りなき類は知る由もなく、すべて学の道に暗く、その任に当た（り）

Preface to the Thousand Insects Album
Medical Official Tanshu Kurimoto showed me this album and said: "This is what I have painstakingly drawn over fifty years. Please give me a word." When I examined it, I found approximately one thousand to several hundred species of creeping and wriggling creatures, each rendered in minute detail with life-like quality, accompanied by clear, precise, learned and comprehensive research that omits nothing. His intention is to enable people to observe their forms and understand their therapeutic properties, thereby serving as an aid in the use of medicines. The master has devoted himself to the study of pharmacognosy with painstaking contemplation, and whenever he encounters any substance, he distinguishes authentic from false and corrects discrepancies. He also knows the geographical regions where they are found, the difficulty of the terrain in mountains and rivers, and the fertility of the soil. The accuracy of his writings and the breadth of his scholarly verification are universally respected throughout the realm. How much more so for someone of limited learning like myself. Confronting this work, I feel all the more shame and amazement. If those in the world who enjoy distinguishing natural objects examine and appreciate this work morning and evening, it will surely provide assistance in broad learning and the identification of species.

Beginning with the plants and trees used in medical practice, he gathered all manner of insects, numbering over a thousand. The one who painted these was Court Physician Kurimoto Zuiken Hōgen. Originally specializing in pharmacognosy, his clear understanding and knowledge of all things between heaven and earth is not something ordinary physicians can hope to achieve. From ancient times, the Abbot Eijuin has frequently praised the excellence of his talent, and since then, whenever I have had occasion to test him on various matters, the breadth of his accomplished understanding is immeasurable. Therefore, upon the completion of this volume, he requested a preface from me. I have always been somewhat involved in the way of Japanese poetry, and as for insects, I have seen and heard of such types as bell crickets, pine crickets, and grasshoppers, but I have no knowledge of the countless varieties, being entirely ignorant in the path of learning and unfit for this task...
