カクレザト　コトヽムシ　チヤタテムシトモ云胡麻子ヨリ小ナリフル

カクレザト　コトコト虫　チャタテムシとも言う。ゴマ粒より小さい。古い障子の紙の上にいて、口の辺りの丸い顎で叩いて音を出す。数が多い時は雨音のようである。夏から秋の蒸し暑く雨で湿った時期に盛んに鳴く。風通しの良い場所には発生しない。

中国の李石『続博物志』によると、「人家に小虫がいて、非常に微小だが響きは甚だしい。これを尋ねても急には見つけることができない。これを竊虫（せっちゅう）と呼ぶ。大きさは胡麻の半分ほどで、形はワラジムシに似て、二本の角があり白色である。その頭を振ると音がする。孟康は朝に賦を作ってこれを鬼魁に例えた」という。また明の陳留の謝肇淛『五雑組』によると、「浙江省中の郡役所で常に小さな虫がいる。コガネムシの幼虫に似て小さく、針の尻のようで、紙窓の間を這うのを好む。足で紙を叩いて音を作ることができ、静かに聞くと水滴のようである。これを追うとすぐに跳ねる」という。これもまた焦螟（しょうめい）の類であろうか。

Kakurezato (Hidden Insect)　Also called Kotokoto-mushi or Chatate-mushi. Smaller than a sesame seed. Found on the paper of old shoji screens, it makes sounds by tapping with the round jaw around its mouth. When numerous, they sound like rain. They actively make sounds during the hot, humid rainy season from summer to autumn. They do not occur in well-ventilated places.

According to Li Shi's "Xu Bowu Zhi" from China: "In human dwellings there are small insects, extremely tiny but with great resonance. When seeking them, they suddenly cannot be seen. They are called 'qie chong' (thief insects). They are as large as half a sesame seed, shaped like pill bugs, with two white antennae. When they shake their heads, they make sounds. Meng Kang composed a rhyme-prose in the morning comparing them to demon leaders." Also, according to Xie Zhaozhe's "Wu Za Zu" from the Ming dynasty in Chenliu: "In the government offices of Zhejiang province there are always small insects. They resemble scarab beetle larvae but are small, like the tail of a needle, and like to crawl between paper windows. They can tap paper with their feet to make sounds, and when listened to quietly, they sound like dripping water. When pursued, they immediately jump." Could this also be a type of jiaoming (minute insect)?
