【本文】
此心は人はいざとは人はしらずといふ
義也人はのはの字つよくあたる心
ありつらゆき初瀬の宿坊久しく
おとづれせざりし事をあるじ恨けるを
人はともかくもあれ此花ばかりは我
おろそかならざる心をしればこそむ
かしにかはらぬから匂ひてうらめる
いろはなしといへる也ふるさとゝいへるは
年頃【数年または長年の間】やどりつけたる宿坊をいう【「ふ」とあるところ。】

【本文】
この歌の心は「人はどうであろうか、人は知らない」という意味である。「人は」の「は」の字が強く当たる心がある。貫之が初瀬の宿坊に久しく訪れなかった事を主人が恨んでいるのに対して、人はどうとでもあれ、この花だけは私がおろそかにしない心を知っているからこそ、昔と変わらない香りで匂って、恨めしい色はないと言ったのである。「ふるさと」と言ったのは、長年の間宿泊し慣れた宿坊をいう。

【Main Text】
The meaning of this poem is "As for people, I wonder - people do not know." There is emphasis on the particle "ha" (は) in "hito ha" (人は). When the master of the lodging at Hatsuse resented that Tsuneyuki had not visited for a long time, he said that whatever people may think, at least these flowers know that his heart does not neglect them, so they bloom with the same fragrance as in the past, showing no resentful color. "Furusato" (hometown/familiar place) refers to the lodging where he had stayed regularly for many years.
