つゝ心のいとまなきによりてや年月にそひて悪業（わるさ）も
止（や）みにけり母はかくとつたへ聞て悦ぶことかぎりなく
此子人並（なみ）に生（を）ひたちなんにうき世（よ）に何かおもはんと
朝夕神仏を祈（いの）るついでにも此子が心ざしのすなほ
ならん事をのみねがひける親の思ひぞやるせなき
かゝりしほどに此子十五の年此 住僧（じうそう）老病（らうびやう）にて遷化（せんげ）し
給ひぬ寺院（じゐん）のならひにて他国（たこく）よりしらぬ僧 入院（じゆいん）
しければ儀兵次も今は我家へ帰りておひくろしう
なりぬればおのが農業（のうぎやう）をいとなみぬはじめのほどは
生れかはりし程におとなしやかなりしがいつの程に

か又もとの悪業（わるさ）に燃（もへ）付ごとく成果（なりはて）しこそかなし
けれいまだ年はさのみならねど人に越（こへ）て長（たけ）高く
骨（ほね）太（ふと）なりしうへいとけなきより野山を家とし力
わざのみ事としける一しほ形（かたち）も年の程よりは
おとなびて見へぬれば若（じやく）年と知たるものこそあれ
しらぬものは男 盛（さかり）りとのみ思ふも理（ことは）りぞかし
ある時 在（ざい）所の者共あつまりて少力ある族（やから）角力（すもふ）取て
遊びけるに義平次も其中へ交（まじ）り角力取しがおの
が力に任（まか）せ人を投（なげ）けるゆへ手足の筋を違（ちが）へ腰の
骨（ほね）などくぢきけれは若き者共一所にあつまり

次第に心に余裕がなくなったためか、年月が経つにつれて悪い行いも止むようになった。母はこのことを伝え聞いて限りなく喜び、「この子が人並みに成長すれば、浮世に何を思い悩むことがあろうか」と、朝夕神仏に祈る際にも、この子の心がけが素直になることばかりを願った。親の思いは切ないものであった。

そうしているうちに、この子が十五歳の年、その寺の住職が老病で亡くなられた。寺院の慣わしで他国から知らない僧が入院してきたので、儀兵次も今は我が家に帰って成長したので、自分の農業に励むようになった。最初のうちは生まれ変わったかのようにおとなしやかであったが、いつの間にか再び元の悪い行いに燃え付くかのようになってしまったのは悲しいことであった。

まだ年はそれほどでもないが、人より背が高く骨太であったうえ、幼い頃から野山を家とし力仕事ばかりを事としていたので、一層体格も年の割には大人びて見えたので、若年と知っている者こそいるが、知らない者は男盛りとばかり思うのも当然であった。

ある時、在所の者たちが集まって少し力のある仲間で相撲を取って遊んでいたところ、義平次もその中に交じって相撲を取ったが、自分の力に任せて人を投げたため、手足の筋を違え腰骨などを挫いてしまったので、若い者たちが一か所に集まり

Perhaps because his heart gradually became less at ease, his evil deeds ceased as the years passed. When his mother heard of this, she rejoiced beyond measure, and when praying to gods and Buddha morning and evening, she would think, "If this child grows up normally, what troubles could there be in this floating world?" She wished only for her child's disposition to become honest. A parent's feelings are indeed heartbreaking.

While this was happening, when the boy turned fifteen, the head priest of that temple died of old age and illness. According to temple custom, an unknown monk from another province came to take over, so Gihei-ji returned to his own home. Now that he had grown up, he began to engage in his own farming. At first, he was as gentle as if reborn, but at some point he again became inflamed with his former evil ways, which was truly sad.

Though he was not yet very old, he was taller than others and had thick bones. Moreover, since childhood he had made the mountains and fields his home and engaged only in physical labor, so his physique appeared even more mature than his years. While some knew his true age, it was natural that strangers would think him to be in the prime of manhood.

One day, the local people gathered together and the somewhat strong among them were wrestling for sport. Gihei-ji joined in and wrestled, but relying on his own strength, he threw people so forcefully that he strained the tendons in their arms and legs and dislocated their hip bones.
