させんは跡の難も有ましと思ひやきもちゐの有
けるを一つ取出し市松に申しけるは此もちゐ（餅）を賽の
神へ備（そな）へて参りなば汝（なんじ）にも食（しよく）をあたふべしはやく
持（もち）行て仏（ほとけ）へ手渡（てわた）しせよ仏の手に取給はぬほどは
夜（よの）明る共 宿（やど）へ帰るべからず仏手に取きこしめすを
見は帰り来よと呉ゝ（くれ〳〵）いひふくめければ此子はものほ
しさに何事もわきまへずもちゐを取持て出行を
母はものほしさにおのれが喰（く）ひて仏（ほどけ）【「け」の右側が欠損？】のまいりたるを
偽（いつは）り帰（かへ）らんもはかりがたしと己（おのれ）が心の直（すぐ）ならぬに
思ひくらべて跡より見へ隠（かく）れに行て堂（とう）のくま

に忍（しの）び伺（うかゝ）ひゐるともしらて市松は母か言ける事を
そのまゝに仏（ほとけ）に向（むか）ひ奉り此もちゐを取てこしめせ
これまいらねば我（われ）もものくふ事 叶（かな）はず仏（のゝ）さまなふ〳〵
と声（こゑ）をあけてかのもちゐを差上（さしあく）れど仏の御 手（て）へは
はるか二尺斗も間ありてとゝかす市松はおとり上り
おどり上り泣（なく）〳〵申けれはふしぎや此 地蔵尊（ちぞうそん）御手を
たれて市松が捧（ささぐ）る所のもちゐをとらせ給ひ御手に
持（もち）給ふこそ有がたけれ母は此 体（てい）を見て大きに
驚（おとろ）きはしり出（いて）悪念（あくねん）忽（たちまち）発起（ほつき）して仏（ほとけ）の御前（ごぜん）に
懺悔（ざんけ）し罪（つみ）を詫（わひ）て市松を抱（たゐ）て我家（わかや）へ帰り

現代語訳

させんは後の災いもあるだろうと思い、やきもち（焼餅）があったのを一つ取り出し、市松に申したことには、「この餅を賽の神へ供えて参るならば、お前にも食べ物をあげよう。早く持って行って仏様へ手渡ししなさい。仏様の手にお取りいただけないうちは、夜が明けても宿へ帰ってはならない。仏様が手にお取りになるのを見たら帰って来なさい」と繰り返し言い聞かせたので、この子は食べ物欲しさに何事もわきまえず餅を取って出て行くのを、母は食べ物欲しさに自分が食べて仏参りをしたと嘘をついて帰るのも計り知れないと、自分の心が素直でないことを思い比べて、後から見え隠れに行って堂の隅に忍んで伺っていることも知らずに、市松は母が言ったことをそのままに仏様に向かい奉り、「この餅をお取りください。これを差し上げなければ私も物を食べることができません。仏様、どうか」と声を上げてその餅を差し上げるけれど、仏様の御手へははるか二尺ほども間があって届かず、市松は踊り上がり踊り上がり泣きながら申し上げると、不思議なことにこの地蔵尊が御手を垂れて市松が捧げる餅をお取りになり、御手にお持ちになることの有り難いことよ。母はこの様子を見て大いに驚き走り出て、悪念がたちまち発起して仏様の御前で懺悔し罪を詫びて、市松を抱いて我が家へ帰り

Thinking that there might be trouble later, the mother took out one of the rice cakes she had and said to Ichimatsu: "If you take this rice cake and offer it to the deity at the crossroads, I will give you food to eat. Quickly take it and present it directly to the Buddha. Until the Buddha takes it in his hands, you must not return home even if dawn breaks. When you see the Buddha take it in his hands, then you may return." She repeatedly instructed him this way. The child, driven by hunger and understanding nothing else, took the rice cake and went out. The mother, thinking that her own hunger might lead her to eat it herself and then lie about having made the offering to the Buddha—something immeasurable in its wrongness—compared this to her own dishonest heart and secretly followed behind, hiding herself and crouching in a corner of the hall to spy. Unaware of this, Ichimatsu did exactly as his mother had told him, facing the Buddha and saying: "Please take this rice cake. If I cannot offer this, I too cannot eat anything. Buddha, please..." He raised his voice and tried to offer the rice cake, but there was a gap of about two feet to the Buddha's hands, and it would not reach. As Ichimatsu jumped up and down, crying as he made his plea, miraculously this Jizo Bodhisattva extended his hand down, took the rice cake that Ichimatsu was offering, and held it in his hand—how blessed this was! The mother, seeing this scene, was greatly shocked and ran out. Her evil thoughts immediately gave way to awakening, and she confessed and apologized for her sins before the Buddha, then embraced Ichimatsu and returned to their home.
