　　　八千代 稲荷（いなり）霊験（れいげん）の事
子を見る事父に不如（しかす）とは無下に賎しきものわきまふ
べくもあらしとおもふはわが愚なる心にくらべたるなる
へし上総（かつさ）の国市原 郡（ごほり）とかやに惣太夫といへる土民あり
家富 栄（さか）へ殊に所に久しきものにて有ければ人もおもく
かしづきけり一子惣右衛門は遊芸（ゆうけい）にさとく何事も発明
なりしか生得（しやうとく）猟（りやう）を好（この）みおのか農業（のうげう）のいとまには山野へ
出て鳥 獣（けだもの）を取て楽（たの）しみければ父惣太夫是を歎（なけ）き若
きものなれは後（ご）世の事おもはぬは理（ことは）りなから物の命を

怪談御伽童　巻二
　　　八千代稲荷霊験の事

「子を見ることは父に及ばず」とは、身分の低い者でも理解できることであろうと思うのは、私の愚かな心で判断したことであろう。上総国市原郡とかいう所に惣太夫という農民がいた。家は豊かで栄え、特にその土地では古くからの家柄であったので、人々も重んじて大切に扱っていた。一人息子の惣右衛門は芸事に聡く、何事も理解が早かったが、生まれつき狩猟を好み、自分の農業の暇な時には山野へ出かけて鳥や獣を捕まえて楽しんでいた。そのため父の惣太夫はこれを嘆き、「若い者であるから後世のことを思わないのは道理ではあるが、生き物の命を...」

"A child's judgment does not match that of his father" - I thought this was something even those of humble station could understand, but this was probably my own foolish way of thinking. In a place called Ichihara District in Kazusa Province, there lived a farmer named Sotayu. His household was wealthy and prosperous, and being a family of long standing in that area, people held him in high regard and treated him with respect. His only son, Soemon, was clever at the arts and quick to understand everything, but he was born with a love of hunting. During breaks from his farming duties, he would go out to the mountains and fields to catch birds and beasts for pleasure. Because of this, his father Sotayu lamented, saying, "He is young, so it is natural that he doesn't think about the afterlife, but taking the lives of living creatures..."
