断（たつ）ときは必（かならず）その身に報（むく）ふと神仏ともに生（いけ）るを殺（ころ）すを
禁し給ふなれば此理をよくわきまへさとりて汝（なんじ）か殺生（せつせう）
思ひ止（とま）れと度々 異見（いけん）すれは心得申たり此 後（のち）はかたく
相止め申さんと心よく受なからもともすれは鉄砲（てつほう）小弓（こゆみ）
打かたげ出ぬれば惣太夫是をかなしみ一家打寄 相談（さうだん）じ
近郷より妻を迎へ遣し此娘に殺生（せつせう）制止の事を
くれ〳〵もいひふくめ猟（かり）を止させける親の慈愛（しあい）ぞ有かた
けれ此娘 鄙（いなか）には珍（めづ）らしき女にてゆうにやさしく【優にやさしく】美目も
心も都にまさる花の盛（さかり）に惣右衛門も詠（ながめ）ありて打向ひけれは
野山の楽しみもおさ〳〵やみて明くれむつましう契（ちき）り

かはして二とせ斗が程に男子をもふけ惣太郎と名付
寵愛（てうあい）しけれはまぎるゝ事多くて今は一向猟にも出ず
父母へ孝行（かうこう）にして召仕ふものにも情深（なさけふか）く何事もめやす
ければ惣太夫も隠居（いんきよ）し惣右衛門世と成ぬれば弥 家業（かげう）
大事に勤（つと）むるにて益（ます〳〵）父の時よりも田 畑（はた）も多くなりぬ
然るに此惣右衛門 隣家（りんか）に高なし鷲（わし）蔵とて近郷（きんかう）に名を
ふれし悪 業（さ）者あり家 貧（まづ）しうても己（おの）がいとなみをばな
さて喧嘩（けんくは）と聞ては人より先へ走（はし）り出相手の身によりて
理非（りひ）を分（わか）たず肩（かた）を持（もち）少の事にても大ぎやうに罵（のゝし）り
人をゆすりて金銀米穀をねだり取美目 能（よき）小娘をば

現代語訳

（生き物の命を）断つ時は必ずその身に報いがあると、神仏ともに生きるものを殺すことを禁じておられるのだから、この道理をよく理解して悟り、お前の殺生の心を思い止まれ」と度々諌言すると、「心得ました。この後は固く慎み申そう」と素直に受け入れたものの、ともすると鉄砲や小弓を担いで出かけてしまうので、惣太夫はこれを悲しみ、一家で集まって相談し、近郷から妻を迎えて、この娘に殺生を止めさせることを繰り返し言い含め、狩りを止めさせようとした。親の慈愛というものは有り難いものである。

この娘は田舎には珍しい女性で、上品で美しく、容貌も心も都に勝る花盛りの美女であった。惣右衛門も見とれて向き合うようになると、野山での楽しみもだんだんと止んで、朝夕むつまじく契りを交わし、二年ほどの間に男の子を授かって惣太郎と名付け、可愛がったので、気を紛らわすことが多くなり、今は全く狩りにも出ず、父母への孝行をし、召使いたちにも情け深く、何事も見事であった。

そこで惣太夫も隠居し、惣右衛門の世となると、いよいよ家業を大事に勤めるようになり、ますます父の時代よりも田畑も多くなった。

ところが、この惣右衛門の隣家に鷹無し鷲蔵という、近郷に名の知れた悪人がいた。家は貧しくても自分の仕事はせず、喧嘩と聞くと人より先に駆けつけ、相手の身分によって理非を分けず肩を持ち、些細なことでも大げさに罵り、人を脅して金銀米穀をせびり取り、美しい娘を...

"When you take a life, it will surely bring retribution upon yourself. Both gods and buddhas forbid the killing of living beings, so understand this principle well, comprehend it, and abandon your desire to kill living creatures." Though he admonished his son repeatedly in this way, and Soemon would obediently respond, "I understand. From now on I will firmly abstain from such acts," he would still shoulder his rifle or small bow and head out. Sotayu grieved over this, so the whole family gathered to discuss the matter and decided to bring a wife from the neighboring villages. They repeatedly instructed this daughter about stopping the killing of living creatures and tried to make him give up hunting. Such was the precious nature of parental love.

This daughter was a woman rare to find in the countryside - elegant and gentle, with both beauty and heart surpassing even those of the capital, in the full bloom of her youth. Soemon too became entranced as he gazed upon her, and gradually his pleasures in the fields and mountains ceased. They spent their days and nights in loving harmony, and within about two years they were blessed with a son whom they named Sotaro. As he doted on the child, he had many things to occupy his attention, and now he no longer went hunting at all. He became filial toward his parents and showed deep kindness to his servants, conducting himself admirably in all things.

So Sotayu retired, and as it became Soemon's era, he devoted himself even more earnestly to the family business, and his rice fields and farmland became even more extensive than in his father's time.

However, next door to this Soemon lived a man called Takashi Washizo, a notorious villain known throughout the neighboring villages. Though his own household was poor, he would not tend to his own work, but whenever he heard of a fight, he would rush there ahead of everyone else. Regardless of which side was right or wrong, he would take sides based on the opponent's social standing, make a great fuss over trivial matters, threaten people to extort money, rice, and grain from them, and would take beautiful young girls...
