さく也かよはき女の肩先（かたさき）より筋違（すじかい）に背（せな）をかけて玉を
打込ければなどかしばしもこたへんうつぶしに伏て
さすがに死（しに）もせずくるしむさまたとへんかたなく惣右衛門は
きも魂（たましい）も失（う）せはてゝしばしはものも覚へざりしが
やう〳〵にさくをいだきおこしいかにやいかにと耳（みゝ）へ口を
寄大声あげて呼ければさくは目をひらき惣右衛門が
顔を打見て物をばさらに得いはず惣右衛門もせんかた
なくたゞ抱（いたき）て居るのみにて薬ふくめんにも持合さず
気はうろたへて手 負（おい）と供にふるふて時をうつしぬ秋の
日は例の暮安く日も山合に入なんとするころ迄さく

かへらねば母は心も心ならずあなたこなた尋しがかゝる事
とはしらで若（もし）や此山の辺（ほとり）に居るやらんと呼立〳〵来り
しがはるかに人 影（かげ）を見つけ走り来り此 体（てい）を見て
大きにおどろきこれはいかに〳〵と狂気（きやうき）のごとく立て見
ゐてみくるひ廻りしがやがて惣右衛門が宿へ走り行此
事を告ければ家内のもの共あはてさはき上を下へと
かへしかけ来る此音に近所の者も父の鷲蔵もかけ
つけ山は人をうゑしごとく手おひを中に引つゝみ
おのが口々心々なる事さへづりける惣右衛門親惣太夫は
ものをもいはずいたりしがしばし鳴（なり）しづまりて鷲蔵に

現代語訳

さくは、か弱い女の肩先から斜めに背中にかけて玉（弾丸）を打ち込まれたので、どうしてしばらくでも応答できようか。うつ伏せに倒れて、さすがに死にもせずに苦しむ様子は例えようもなく、惣右衛門は肝も魂も失せ果てて、しばらくは何も分からなかった。

ようやく我に返ってさくを抱き起こし、「どうした、どうした」と耳に口を寄せて大声をあげて呼んだところ、さくは目を開いて惣右衛門の顔を見つめたが、物を言うことは全くできなかった。惣右衛門もどうすることもできず、ただ抱いているだけで、薬を飲ませようにも持ち合わせがなく、気は動転して、負傷者と共に震えて時を過ごした。秋の日は例のとおり暮れやすく、日も山間に入ろうとする頃までさくが

帰らないので、母は心配でならず、あちらこちら尋ね回ったが、このような事とは知らずに、「もしやこの山のあたりにいるのではないか」と呼びながらやって来た。はるか彼方に人影を見つけて走って来て、この有様を見て大いに驚き、「これはどうしたことか」と狂気のように立ったり座ったりして取り乱し回ったが、やがて惣右衛門の家へ走って行き、この事を告げると、家族の者たちは慌てふためき、上を下への大騒ぎで駆けつけて来た。この騒ぎで近所の者も父の鷲蔵も駆けつけ、山は人で埋まったようになり、負傷者を中に取り囲んで、それぞれが思い思いのことをしゃべり立てた。惣右衛門の父親である惣太夫は何も言わずにいたが、しばらく静まり返った後、鷲蔵に

What has happened?" she ran about frantically like a madwoman, standing and sitting in distress. Soon she ran to Sozaemon's house and reported the incident. The household members were thrown into panic and came rushing in great commotion. At this noise, the neighbors and Saku's father Washizo also came running, and the mountain became crowded with people who surrounded the wounded woman in the center, each chattering about their own thoughts.
