いづのころにやいづれの北（きた）の御 方（かた）
やらん女（め）の童（わらは）あまたさふらはせ給ひ
是なん徒然（つれ〳〵）の御 伽（とき）とて？こ？れかれ
興（けう）せさせたまひぬ折から長（なか）月の
末（すへ）にて虫（むし）の音（ね）もたえ〳〵に初時（はつし）
雨（ぐれ）軒（のき）におとなふ物から寝覚（ねさめ）がち

　怪談御伽童序

女の童（わらわ）を多数お仕えさせなさって、
これを退屈しのぎのお相手として、あれこれと
興じさせなさった折、長月の
末で虫の音もまばらになり、初時雨が
軒に音を立てる中、眠りが浅くなりがちで

Preface to Strange Tales for Children
At some time in the past, at some northern lady's residence,
many young female attendants were kept in service,
and as companions to while away tedious hours, various
entertainments were provided. It was at the end of the ninth month,
when the sounds of insects had become sparse, and the first winter rain
drummed on the eaves, causing restless sleep.
