なる夜（よ）すがら例（れい）の童（わらは）共御 前（ぜん）に
侍らせ給ひて己（めい）〳〵か聞（きゝ）覚（おぼ）へし
事共とり〳〵に語（かた）り侍らさせ給ひし
品（しな）〳〵のさすかに耳（みゝ）とまるふしき？
ありて筆（ふて）を染（そめ）てしるし侍へる
元来（もとより）片言（かたこと）交（まじ）りのすさみをよく
弁（わきま）へたらん人はいとかゝ？みらいたく

おかしからめとかの稚（おさな）ものゝ舌（した）の利（り）
なるに詞（ことば）のつゞき拙（つたな）きはひか
耳（みゝ）のあやまりならんかしとおほこ？
かに？思ひゆるし給へかし

現代語訳

なる夜すがら、例の童たちを御前に
お仕えさせなさって、めいめいが聞き覚えた
事どもを、とりどりに語らせなさった
品々の中に、さすがに耳に留まる不思議な
ことがあって、筆を染めて記し申し上げる次第である。
もとより片言まじりの戯れ言をよく
理解できる人は、とても興味深く

面白く思われることでしょうが、あの幼い者どもの舌の
利くのに言葉の続きが拙いのは、筆の
誤りでしょうか、耳の聞き違いでしょうか、と大まかに
お思いになって、どうかお許しください。

Throughout such nights, the usual attendant children were kept in service before her,
and each one was made to tell various stories they had heard and remembered.
Among the diverse tales, there were indeed some mysterious
matters that caught the ear, so I have taken up my brush to record them here.
Originally, those who can well understand the playful words mixed with childish speech
will find them quite fascinating

and amusing. But when those young ones speak fluently yet their words are clumsily connected,
is this due to errors of the brush
or mistakes of the ear? Please think of it broadly
and grant your forgiveness.
