これを見てこはいかに〳〵といづれもおどろき
さはぎけるに内庭今迄かはきて一てきのし
めりもなかりしにたちまち水をなかしたる
ごとく所々くぼき所へはたまる程なり庭に居
たるものどもはこれにおどろき上には薬よ水
よと呼生るやう〳〵にして此女 息（いき）出たりし
ばらく打ちやすめ伏せて後は平生になりけり
扨ありしやうを問に右のことともかたりぬ
何さま此家まで追かけ来りしが其後は
しらずといへりこれ世にいふ河童なるべし

此家まて追来りて川童こけたる成へし
其時頭の水こぼれたるによりて庭へ水出
ぬらんなど取々にいひもてあつかひぬ主人の
五郎徳これをつく〴〵見聞て其日の中に
下女をばいとま遣はし宿へ送り帰しけるとぞ

現代語訳

これを見て「これはどうしたことか」と皆驚き騒いでいると、内庭は今まで乾いていて一滴の湿り気もなかったのに、たちまち水を流したかのように、所々のくぼんだ場所には水がたまるほどになった。庭にいた者たちはこれに驚き、上では「薬を、水を」と呼び、ようやくこの女は息を吹き返した。しばらく横になって休んだ後は、平常通りになった。

さて、ありさまを尋ねると、前述のことどもを語った。「なんにしても、この家まで追いかけて来たが、その後のことは知らない」と言った。これは世に言う河童であろう。

この家まで追って来て、川童（河童）がこけ倒れたのであろう。その時、頭の水がこぼれたために庭へ水が出たのだろうなどと、それぞれに話し合った。主人の五郎徳はこれをつくづくと見聞きして、その日のうちに下女には暇を出し、実家へ送り返したということである。

英語訳

Seeing this, everyone exclaimed "What is this?" and were startled and made a commotion. The inner garden, which had been dry until then without a drop of moisture, suddenly became as if water had been poured over it, with water pooling in the low-lying areas. Those who were in the garden were surprised by this, while those above called out "Medicine! Water!" and finally the woman came back to her senses. After lying down and resting for a while, she returned to normal.

When they asked her what had happened, she told them the aforementioned events. "In any case, it chased me all the way to this house, but I don't know what happened after that," she said. This must be what people call a kappa (water demon).

It had chased her to this house where the kappa must have fallen over. At that time, the water from its head spilled out, which is why water appeared in the garden—or so they discussed among themselves. The master Gorotoku, having carefully observed and heard all this, dismissed the maidservant that very day and sent her back to her home.
