これしもその辺の棟梁（とうりやう）なれば弟子共あまた
ありて家内も広（ひろ）く住居けり五月雨はれて
川水も清頃になりてけれは何国も同し女の
仕業（しわざ）冬の衣のあかを洗ひて下女是をすゝきに
前なる川へ持行清めけるがいと多くて手も
たへずつかれければかはらの石にこし打かけ
しばしやすみ居けるにいやしき世話にいへる
水のうへにもいぬるとかやにてねふり気さし
とろ〳〵とふねこぎけるに何かはしらず足を
引なりおどろきさめて見れば八つ斗なる

童（わらは）の顔は頭髪をふりかけたればよくも見ず手は
ほそきが足をつよくとらへてわが身は半身水に
ひたり居て引也これや川へ落（おち）入あがらんとに
やと心得てその手をとりて引上んとするに
更に足をはなさずとかく引しろいてやう〳〵に
足をはなし何かはしらすおぞけだちて逃
あがりけれは彼（かの）童も同しく水中より出て
追来るに逸（いち）足を出して【＝速足で】逃るにやう〳〵主の
家人走り入座敷へ上るとその女は絶（たへ）入たふれ
ぬ家内の上下昼飯をしたゝめ居たりしが

現代語訳

この五郎徳はその辺りの棟梁であったので、弟子たちも大勢おり、家も広く住んでいた。五月雨が晴れて川水も清らかになったころ、どこの国でも同じ女の仕事で、冬の衣類の汚れを洗うため、下女がこれを濯ぎに前の川へ持って行き、清めていた。しかし洗い物がとても多くて手に負えず疲れたので、河原の石に腰を掛けて、しばらく休んでいた。卑しい世話事について「水の上にも寝る」と言われるように、眠気がさして、うとうととまどろんでいると、何者かわからないが足を引っ張られた。

驚いて目を覚まして見ると、八つほどの子供で、顔は髪の毛が垂れかかっているのでよく見えず、手は細いが足を強く掴んで、自分の身体は半身を水に浸けて座っており、引っ張っている。「これは川へ落ち込んで上がろうとしているのだな」と理解して、その手を取って引き上げようとしたが、まったく足を離さず、あれこれと引き合いをしてようやく足を離した。何者かわからないが恐ろしくなって逃げ上がったところ、その子供も同じく水中から出て追いかけてくるので、急いで逃げて、ようやく主人の家に駆け込み座敷へ上がると、その女は気絶して倒れてしまった。家内の主従は昼飯の準備をしていたが、

This Gorotoku was the master carpenter of that area, so he had many apprentices and lived in a spacious house. When the May rains had cleared and the river water had become clean, as is women's work everywhere, a maidservant took the winter clothes to be washed of their grime to the river in front of the house to rinse and clean them. However, there was so much laundry that she couldn't handle it all and became tired, so she sat down on a stone by the riverbank to rest for a while. As they say about menial household chores, "one sleeps even on the water," and drowsiness came over her as she dozed off. Suddenly, something unknown grabbed her foot.

Startled awake, she saw a child of about eight years old. Its face was obscured by hair hanging down, so she couldn't see it clearly. Its hands were thin, but it gripped her foot strongly. The creature's body was half-submerged in the water as it sat there pulling her. Thinking "This must have fallen into the river and is trying to get out," she took its hand to try to pull it up, but it wouldn't release her foot at all. After struggling back and forth, it finally let go of her foot. Not knowing what it was but feeling terrified, she fled upward, but the child also emerged from the water and chased after her. Running at full speed, she barely managed to rush into her master's house and climb up to the sitting room, whereupon the woman fainted and collapsed.
