一抑浅間ヶ嶽は信州第一の高山にして麓は上野国吾妻郡え

三癸卯秋七月一山火を発し砂石数百里に及ぶと云々甚
濫觴（ランシヤウ）を尋るに夏四月九日より甚火を発￣シ日々盛￣ンに
して恒に替れり同六月廿七八日夜近国へ灰のふる事

そもそも浅間ヶ嶽は信州第一の高山であり、その麓は上野国吾妻郡にまたがっている。絶頂には浅間権現ならびに九万八千仏が勧請されており、霊験はことのほか新たかである。本地仏は普賢大菩薩であり、ともに中山に立てば、すなわち浅間と名付けられ、参詣する貴賤を問わず人々が尊く拝礼申し上げている。しかしながら、この山は硫黄の気が強く、平素より煙が立ちのぼることが絶えることなく、参詣する老若男女が肝を冷やすことが多かった。さて、いかなる年に当たるかというと、当天明三年癸卯（みずのとう）の秋七月に、一山が火を発し、砂石が数百里に及んだという。そもそもその始まりを尋ねると、夏四月九日より激しく火を発し、日々盛んになって常とは変わっていた。同年六月二十七・二十八日の夜、近隣の国々へ灰の降ること、心砕ける老農はこれを気にかけた。また同年七月二日・三日の夜も灰が降り……

Mount Asama (Asamagatake) is the foremost high mountain of Shinano Province, with its foothills extending into Agatsuma District of Kōzuke Province. At its summit, the deity Asama Gongen and ninety-eight thousand Buddhas have been enshrined, and their miraculous powers are especially manifest. The principal Buddhist deity (honji) is Fugen Daibosatsu (Samantabhadra), and upon standing at Nakayama one faces Asama directly; hence it received the name Asama. People of all social standings — noble and common alike — visit the mountain and pay their reverent respects. However, this mountain has an abundance of sulfurous vapors, and smoke rises ceaselessly in ordinary times, causing many visitors, young and old, to be frightened. Now, in what year did this occur? In the autumn of the third year of Tenmei, the year Mizunoto-U (1783), the entire mountain erupted in fire, and it is said that sand and rocks reached several hundred ri in distance. Tracing the very origins of this disaster, from the ninth day of the fourth month of summer, great fire erupted, growing more intense day by day, differing entirely from normal conditions. On the nights of the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth days of the sixth month of the same year, ash fell upon the neighboring provinces, and elderly farmers with concerned hearts took note of this.
