みとりなる草の原も砂石かはらのことく青
葉の茂りぬる木々か枝も冬かれにひとし

道を埋みぬれは馬や路のすゝの音も久しく
なりやみかち人の往来さへとゝまり侍りぬまた吾

雲もはるなの山見へて里人はいとよろ
こひ男女ともにをのが手わさにくれぬる
夜思ひもかけす浅間が嶽の頂より湧し
泥水なかれ出吾妻川えおしいたしぬれは
火と石のほのほにて泥水にへかへりかの川
添のむら〳〵民家あまた押ながし老も
若きもこは却て火輪水輪のやふれけるとや
思ひけん死る人〳〵もゝちのかすにも
あまり侍りぬ人々川中よりたすけ

現代語訳

緑なる草の原も砂石瓦のようになり、青葉の茂った木々の枝も冬枯れのようになった。日暮れ雲り薄氷の山の向こうから上野国の松井田、安中のあたりまでも、なお深く道を埋めてしまったので、馬や駕籠の進む音も久しく止んでしまい、徒歩で行く人の往来さえも途絶えてしまった。

また吾妻郡では鳴る音だけで砂も降らずに、その日ばかりは雲も晴れて浅間山も見えて、里人はとても喜び、男女ともに自分の手仕事に暮れていた。

夜、思いもかけず浅間岳の頂から湧き出た泥水が流れ出て吾妻川へ押し寄せたので、火と石の炎で泥水が煮え返り、その川沿いの村々の民家を数多く押し流した。老いも若きも、これは却って火輪水輪が破れたのかと思ったであろうか。死んだ人々も百を超える数になった。人々は川の中から助け
