**Right Page** **Upper Section** "Shinshaku" here means "shinshaku" written with the characters for *shin* (divine/spirit) and *shaku* (interpretation/teaching) — 神釈. The way of teaching, with its qualities of compassion and honesty, surpasses even the fleeting beauty of blossoms and autumn leaves in its depth of interest and feeling. When we speak of these two characters, 神釈, the teachings of Confucianism are also encompassed within them. And when viewed more broadly, it is also *shinshaku* written as 斟酌 — meaning "to weigh and consider." 斟酌 is read as *kumi-kumu* — to fathom and measure the hearts of others — and means conducting oneself not merely as one's own heart dictates, but with a mindful regard for the world around one. Such a disposition of heart is no less moving and interesting than the sight of blossoms and autumn leaves; indeed, it becomes a character that is both deeply affecting and admirable. This, too, connects with the teachings that have come before. Indeed, since there is this way of *shinshaku*, it would seem appropriate to write it as 神釈. **Lower Section (Poem)** In this world, more moving and interesting than blossoms and autumn leaves — such things are, for the most part, to be found in the way of *shinshaku*. --- **Left Page** *[Blank page]*
