**Right Page** **Upper Section** A warrior who advances onto the battlefield and takes the head of an enemy gains an advantage and is praised by others. The one whose head is taken suffers loss and is laughed at by others. Yet because this is something visible to the eye, it is a matter that everyone already knows. The same principle applies — in countless ways — to the hidden, unrecognized manner in which a person lives within their own heart, as well as in the everyday affairs and dealings of the world. Since these things all depend upon each individual's habitual disposition of heart, one ought to reflect carefully and take them to heart. **Lower Section (Poem)** In this world — there are those who gain advantage and are praised by others, and those who suffer loss and are laughed at by others. --- **Left Page** **Upper Section** Those who hold fast to loyalty between lord and retainer, and who, without a thought for their own lives, leave their names to posterity — such people have kept to the great moral integrity of the human way, without being swept away by folly. On the other hand, there are those who abandon themselves freely to carnal desires, are overtaken by illness, and vanish like the smoke rising from Toribeyama — or those who fall in with disreputable companions and bury themselves in the soil of a place of exile. These people are swept away by dissolution, and leave behind a name for faithlessness and want of filial piety — a truly wretched and pitiable life. Since a single step's difference leads to a thousand leagues' difference in the end, one must take great care from the very beginning. **Lower Section (Poem)** In this world — even among those who cast away their lives, there are those who are not swept away by folly, and there are those who are swept away and ruin themselves.
