私（わたくし）の利（り）をもつて犯時（をかすとき）は。魔術（ましゆつ）亡国（ばうこく）
のはじめなり。能々（よく〳〵）つゝしむべし。凡（をよそ）
軍には初中後（しよちうご）あり。和（くわ）をはしめとし。
地（ち）を中（なか）とし。天の時を後（のち）とす。まこと
に大国をおさむるは。小鮮（せうせん）を烹（にる）がごと
し。况（いはんや）合戦（かつせん）にをいてをや

そもそも、戦（いくさ）とは天下の禍福を左右するものである。天の理に従って戦う時は、四海を治める徳の基となる。私利私欲のために侵す時は、魔道・亡国の始まりとなる。よくよく慎むべきである。およそ戦には、初・中・後の三段階がある。和（人の和）を初めとし、地（地の利）を中とし、天の時を後（最後の要素）とする。まことに大国を治めるのは、小魚を煮るようにそっと丁寧に扱うようなものである。ましてや合戦においてはなおさらのことである。

War is that which determines the fortune and misfortune of the realm. When one wages war in accordance with the principles of Heaven, it becomes the foundation of virtue that brings peace to the four seas. When one wages war out of personal gain and greed, it marks the beginning of ruinous and wicked destruction of one's domain. One must be deeply mindful of this. In general, warfare has three stages: beginning, middle, and end. Harmony among people comes first; the advantage of terrain comes second; and the favorable timing of Heaven comes last. Indeed, governing a great nation is like cooking a small fish — it must be done with great delicacy and care. How much more so, then, when it comes to actual battle.
