西は金気（きんき）・殺伐（さつばつ）の方角であるからだ。およそ怪異や妖異というものは、すべて自分自身が招くものである。なぜかといえば、我が国（日本）では人々がみな北を忌み嫌うため、北へ移ると「禍があるのではないか」と心に恐れを抱き、その結果、自然にその気に感応して妖異がやってくるのだ。我が国では西を忌むという習慣がないため、西へ移っても禍はまったくない。また、中国では西を忌むため、西へ移れば禍があるが、北を忌む習慣がないので、北に家を構えても祟りがない。
