よく見ると、右の六人のうち四人は女性、二人は男性であった。この者たちに話を聞いてみると、前橋の上流十里ほど先の姥村という所の者で、また一人は白井町の名主某の妻であるということが分かったので、とりあえず身元を確認して送り届けたということである。同日夜、子の刻（午前0時）頃、およそ二十間余りもあろうかという、鮫のような形をしたものが利根川を通って行った。その音のすさまじいことは、何にたとえようもないほどであった。同夜五つ時（午前8時）頃、また同様のものが川上から響きを立てて流れ来て、水底に沈んでいった。
一、同十日朝から、前橋・伊勢崎の者で水防に出かけた者がおよそ二百人ほどいたが、一人も帰って来ないということである。今でも昼夜を問わず川筋に出かけているが、水中から煙が立ち上り、大石が火のように燃えている。時々響きがひどく、石や砂が燃え上がる時は、江戸での火事のように見える。そのため昼夜とも寝ることができず、大変困っている。

That same night, around the hour of the Rat (midnight), something shaped like a shark, about twenty ken long, passed through the Tone River. The sound it made was so terrible that there was nothing to compare it to. Around the fifth hour of the same night (8 AM), another similar thing came flowing down from upstream with a strong rumbling sound and sank to the bottom of the river.
