現代語訳
ここに江戸南町二丁目に中根重兵衛という老人がいた。以前は四谷辺りで私官の身分であったが、主人の用金五百両を盗み取られ、それより浪々の身となり、貧しく暮らしていた。しかし正直小食な者で、心に思うことには「我が過失により主君から預かった金を失ったとはいえ、武士の願いというものでもないが、何とぞ分実の金子五百両を調え、お返し申し上げたい」と、いろいろ工夫したが、今の世の中で聞き入れられないものは金である。
されども二人の娘を持っていた。姉をお房、妹をお糸として、二人とも美しいことは稀なりという。生まれつきなので、二三年以前に姉のお房を新吉原へ金百両で勤め奉公に出し、何とぞ金を調達して主人へお返し申し上げようと心がけたが、あと四百両は なかなか急には調達できない。いろいろと心を痛めていた。
女房「お綱、どうぞお前の願いを叶えて上げたい」

Here in Edo's Minami-machi 2-chome lived an old man named Nakane Jūbei. Previously, he had served as a low-ranking official in the Yotsuya area, but when his master's operational funds of 500 ryō were stolen, he became a masterless wanderer and lived in poverty. However, being an honest and frugal man, he thought to himself: "Even though I lost the money entrusted to me by my lord through my own fault, though it may not be a samurai's proper wish, I would somehow like to gather the full sum of 500 ryō and return it to him." He devised various schemes, but in this world, money is the hardest thing to obtain.
However, he had two daughters. The elder was named Ofusa and the younger Oito, and both were exceptionally beautiful. Being naturally gifted, two or three years ago he sent his elder daughter Ofusa to work at Shin-Yoshiwara for 100 ryō, hoping somehow to raise the money to repay his master. But the remaining 400 ryō could not be obtained quickly, and he was deeply troubled by various concerns.
