【右丁】
ここにまた四谷に松ヶ谷曽根の介という者の弟に左七という、今風の粋な男がいて、そのような者を端から見ているような通の色男であった。そうであるから、少し良い男は弓町路考の本所路考のと評判するこの世の中、この左七も先は稀な男なので、後家、娘、人の女房、下女、下女を問わず、一目見ると惚れないということはなかった。

誰が言うということなく、四谷瀬川等ともっぱら評判していたので、兄の曽根の介も困った男だと思い、主人への聞こえを憚って、今は勘当同然となっていた。
十兵衛の女房のお綱に少し内縁があって、浪人の家へ毎日通うようになっていた。しかしながら十兵衛は親切な者で、憐れみをかけていた。
「これ左七さん、お前さん、この家へおいでなさったその日から、可愛らしいと思い始めたが、私の因果で、どうぞ女房にしてくださいませ。お前さえ合点してくださるなら、母さんにお願い申して、天下晴れた夫婦になってみたいわいな」
「お心ざしは嬉しいが、親の許さぬ板挟みごと、その上我が身の襷は大恩ある十兵衛殿、ご夫婦もしこの事現れば、お腹立ちのほども気の毒、これだけはお許しと言いたい所だが、私も遠くからそのお気持ちは...」

Here again, in Yotsuya, there was a man named Saschichi, the younger brother of one Matsugaya Sonenosuke. He was a stylish, sophisticated man of current fashion, a worldly lothario who observed such types from the sidelines. Being such a person, in this world where any reasonably handsome man gets compared to the heartthrobs of Yumi-cho or Honjo, this Saschichi was also previously a rare specimen of a man. Therefore, whether widow, maiden, another's wife, or maidservant - regardless of station - there was no woman who would not fall for him at first sight.

Without anyone saying so explicitly, he was especially renowned around Yotsuya Segawa and such places. His elder brother Sonenosuke found him to be a troublesome man and, fearing what his master might hear, had now essentially disowned him.
He had developed a somewhat intimate relationship with Jūbei's wife Otsuna and had taken to visiting the ronin's household daily. However, Jūbei was a kind-hearted man who showed him compassion.
"Listen, Saschichi-san, from the day you first came to this house, I began to think you were lovely. Due to my karma, please make me your wife. If only you would consent, I would ask mother's permission and would like to become a proper married couple under heaven's blessing."
"Your feelings make me happy, but there's the dilemma of my parents' disapproval, and moreover, my obligation is to Jūbei-sama, to whom I owe a great debt.
