享保の初年に、中国船が一種の珍しい木を持参し、幕府に献上した。これは特別に優れた良品であるということで、染井の種樹家である花屋伊兵衛という者に命令を下し、接木をさせることになった。しかし、今まで見たことのない珍しい樹木であったため、伊兵衛は躊躇してなかなか決断できずにいた。よく観察してみると、その木は太山楓というものに似ていることから、これを官園に移植し、台木として接木を行ったところ、一本の樹を損なうことなく順調に生育し、見事に繁茂した。その後十二年が経ち、広く世に普及させようと一株を

In the early years of the Kyōhō era, a Chinese ship brought a rare species of tree and presented it as tribute to the shogunal government. As this was considered an exceptionally fine specimen, orders were given to a tree cultivator from Somei named Hanaya Ihē to graft it. However, since this was an unprecedented rare tree, he hesitated and could not readily decide what to do. Upon careful observation, he noticed that this tree resembled what is called taizan-kaede (grand mountain maple), so he transplanted it to the official garden and used it as rootstock for grafting.
