〇深川伊勢崎町に住る船大工上総屋五郎兵衛は地震の時其子庄太郎
善次郎を連れて先へ出しか妻かくは実子つやといへる幼を措（サシオ）き先妻
のうめる盲女まさは義理ある子なれはとて先へ抱へて戸口迄出しやり
夫より家に入て実子つやを助んとする内火炎に迫りて母子《割書：つやを抱て｜死したり》
ともに焼死たりあたりの人其義烈【忠義・正義の心が強くはげしいこと】を感すと

【注① 「当百銭(とうひゃくせん)の略。天保六年(一八三五)から発行された百文通用の長円形銭貨。裏面に「百文に相当する」という意味で「当百」の文字が鋳出されている。天保通宝銭。】
【注② 江戸時代、明和五年(一七六八)から発行された寛永通宝四文銭のこと。黄銅貨で、一文銭とは形と色が異なり区別されているが、俗には「四文銭」とも「真鍮銭」とも呼ばれた。】

○深川伊勢崎町に住む船大工上総屋五郎兵衛は、地震の時にその子庄太郎と
善次郎を連れて先に外に出した。しかし妻のかくは実子のつやという幼児を置いて、先妻の
産んだ盲目の女の子まさは義理の子であるからといって、先に抱えて戸口まで出してやり、
それから家に入って実子のつやを助けようとしているうちに火炎に迫られて、母子
ともに焼死した。周りの人はその義烈（忠義・正義の心が強く激しいこと）に感動した。
○同町にある家守の常吉は自身番屋にいて、地震に驚いて家へ戻ったところ、すでに
潰れて妻のたよが下敷きになっていたので、屋根を破って助けようとしているうちに隣家から
火が起こって燃え上がった。そこで妻はいよいよ苦しくて泣き声を出して「助けて」と
言う。常吉は言った。「お前を助けようとすれば家財が残らず燃えて、明日から乞食をしなければならない。
諦めよ」と言って、情けなくも彼女を置いて持っている調度品

を運び出そうとしたが叶わず、妻は焼死し家財は残らず灰燼となった。
当百という銭八貫五百文、真鍮銭十五貫文があったのを救い出そうとして、それ
さえも燃えた。翌朝燃えた銭と鍋釜の類を拾い集めたものも、いつの間にか
賊に奪われた。常吉はそれから狂気を発し、でたらめなことを言って焼け跡を
さまよい歩いたということである。彼には娘が一人いて、せきといい、この夜は
知り合いの方に泊まり合わせて無事であったということである。
○深川辺りのある諸侯の臣下竹村新之助は下屋敷に住んでいたが、地震で屋敷内から出火したため、主家から預かった鉄砲の火薬の入った大きな容器
等を海辺まで持ち運んで、大方を助けた。そのため自分の家は捨て置いて、家財は
残らず焼失した。翌日の朝、上屋敷から重役の臣下が火元吟味のためにここに来た

○Gorobei of Kazusaya, a shipwright living in Fukagawa Isezaki-chō, took his sons Shōtarō and Zenjirō out first when the earthquake occurred. However, his wife Kaku left behind their real child Tsuya, a young child, and first carried out Masa, a blind girl born to his previous wife, saying she was his stepdaughter, taking her to the doorway. Then he went back into the house to save his real child Tsuya, but was overtaken by flames, and both mother and child died in the fire. The people around were moved by his sense of righteousness and justice (girestu - strong and intense loyalty and righteousness).
○Tsunekichi, a house manager in the same town, was at the neighborhood watch station and rushed home when startled by the earthquake, only to find it had already collapsed with his wife Tayo trapped underneath. While he was trying to break through the roof to save her, fire broke out from the neighboring house and flared up. His wife cried out in increasing agony, "Help me!" Tsunekichi said, "If I try to save you, all our household goods will burn and we'll have to beg from tomorrow on. Give up," and heartlessly left her to try to carry out his possessions.

But he couldn't manage it, his wife died in the fire, and all his household goods turned to ashes.
He had eight kan and five hundred mon in tōhyaku coins and fifteen kan mon in brass coins, but when he tried to save them, even those burned. The next morning he gathered up the burned coins and pots and pans, but these too were stolen by thieves at some point.
From then on, Tsunekichi went mad, saying nonsensical things and wandering around the burned ruins. He had one daughter named Seki, who had stayed with acquaintances that night and was unharmed.
○Takemura Shinnosuke, a retainer of a certain daimyo around Fukagawa, lived in the lower residence. When fire broke out within the estate due to the earthquake, he carried large containers of gunpowder for firearms entrusted by his lord's house to the seaside and saved most of them. Therefore he abandoned his own house and all his household goods were completely burned. The next morning, a senior retainer came from the upper residence to investigate the source of the fire.
