町松平内記殿方へ参り用事済て帰路右地震来る故美濃守殿駕
籠の中より声を懸安全の地へ急くへしといふに陸尺【六尺のこと。貴人の駕籠を担ぐ人足。「六」と「陸」は音が通じることから文字を代用した】も心得て急かむ
とすれ共動揺強き故駈る事能はす其間に柳町常州屋といふ質

てきたので、新之助は前の経緯を告げて、その後で「私事は御覧の通り箸一本も残らず焼失してしまったので、これより御報告申し上げたく存じます」と言った。すると重役の者が言うには「武士たる者が箸一本も持ち出さないとは、あまりに狼狽した仕方で、上への報告は難しい」と言った。そこで新之助は顔色を変えて「主君の大切な物を持ち退いて自分の財産を焼いたのを、なんで狼狽者と責めるのか。そう言う貴殿こそ、詳しく下の者の話を聞かずして人を批判することこそ狼狈者よ」と言って、まったく屈しなかった。重役の士も道理とは思ったが、その言い過ぎに憤り、その争いは果てしなかった。その後どうなったかは聞いていない。（これらは無用の話であるが、見るままに記した）
