并に芝居町のほとりへかけて
あやしき鳥あらはれその鳴くこへ
甚た哀なり或時諸職の
ものども嘉肴をとゝのへ
酒もりしける坐中より
大鯰の肴をさらひとり虚空
はるかに舞登りけり
まことにふしぎの事共なり
これ定て深き意味ある事
なるへけれともその次第をしれる
もの更になけれは人〳〵
深くあや
しみ
けりとそ
のちかならす
おもひあたる
事あるへし
と尓いふ

難義鳥（なんぎちょう）
大地震の翌晩、午前2時頃から遊郭の真上、並びに芝居町の辺りにかけて、怪しい鳥が現れ、その鳴き声は甚だ哀愁に満ちていた。ある時、様々な職業の者たちが美味しい料理を整え、酒宴を催していた座敷の中から、大鯰の料理をさらって取り、虚空はるか高くに舞い上がった。まことに不思議な出来事である。これはきっと深い意味のあることなのだろうが、その真意を知る者は全くいないので、人々は深く怪しみ、不審に思った。いずれ必ず思い当たることがあるだろうと人々は言った。

【Picture Description】
The Difficult Bird (Nangi-chō)
On the night following the great earthquake, from around 2 AM, a mysterious bird appeared over the pleasure quarters and around the theater district. Its cry was extremely mournful. At one time, when people of various occupations had prepared delicious food and were holding a drinking party, the bird snatched away a dish of large catfish from their gathering and soared high up into the empty sky. This was truly a wondrous event. This must surely have some deep meaning, but since no one knew its true significance, people were deeply puzzled and suspicious. They said that eventually something would surely come to mind that would make sense of it all.
