手長島は、もともと大変欲深い者で、近所に裕福でない商人がいるのを目をつけ、ある夜ひそかに体と左の手は家に寝かせておいて、右の手だけを黒装束にして、その家の引き戸から泥棒に入った。しかし、この家の女房は美しく寝乱れて、前後も分からずに無防備な様子で、心を奪われて打ちに寝ている心を悪用しようとするが、ここには手だけしかないことから、どうすることもできないでいる時、家の亭主が見つけて「やれ化け物よ」と叫ぶと、宝の山に入りながら手を空しく逃げ帰る。

Tenaga-shima was inherently a very greedy creature. He spotted a merchant in the neighborhood who wasn't wealthy, and one night he secretly left his body and left hand sleeping at home, dressed only his right hand in black clothing, and entered through the sliding door of that house as a thief. However, the wife of this house was beautiful and disheveled in sleep, lying defenseless without awareness of her surroundings. Though he was tempted to take advantage of her vulnerable sleeping state, since he had only his hand there, he could do nothing about it. At that moment, the master of the house discovered him and cried out "Oh, a monster!" So despite entering what should have been a treasure trove, he returned home empty-handed.
