朝比奈は手長島が盗人根性のあることを知り、後日の難儀を恐れて国へ帰そうと思うが、遠路のことなのでただでは帰せないだろうと、よい程度に路用金を渡して早々に内から追い出す。これが手切れ金の始まりである。また盗みをする者を「手が長い」というのも、この時より始まったのである。
