鳶尾は古くよりシャガと訓ずる。しかし鳶尾と一八（いちはつ）とは別物である。〔鳶尾は〕燕子花（かきつばた）の類である。シャガは胡蝶花ともいわれる。それゆえ一八のことを「紫胡蝶（むらさきこちょう）」と呼ぶ。シャガは一八〔とともに〕農家の屋根の棟に多く植えられる。その理由は未だ聞いたことがない。

The plant 鳶尾 (Enbī) has long been read as "Shaga" in Japanese. However, 鳶尾 and 一八 (Ichihatsu, *Iris tectorum*) are distinct plants. [The Shaga] belongs to the same family as the Kakitsubata (燕子花, *Iris laevigata*). Shaga is also known as Kochōka (Butterfly Flower). For this reason, 一八 (Ichihatsu) is called "Murasaki-kochō" (Purple Butterfly). Shaga and Ichihatsu are frequently planted together on the ridges of farmhouse rooftops, though the reason for this practice has not yet been heard.
